I think the tests are fairly conclusive about these here.

For once, PL is ahead of the game with a diode ;)

EDIT: DTR gets his shipment on Monday as well.

Not at all, we still have no idea what's the real max power :eg:

Without correction the beam at the output is a little bit tighter as of the 1,6W 445nm diode
Tighter meaning better?

Thinner and longer is better for use with correction optics, better for lab lasers. Not better for handhelds.

I was under the impression that we weren't doing a kill test, i.e. max power? Since this diode as actually going to somebody.

Or are we just assuming that all new diodes will revive?

^guess this was a general statement from Atomicrox. Not in particularly relevant to this GB diode here.

No we won't do a "kill test" but also we won't be as conservative as the guy on PL he just sticked to the datasheet current ARG will make an efficiency graph and a power graph beyond those currents and will stop when he's at the highest point of that curve or becomes unstable.
Maybe it dies during that but if so it's not that hard.

If it dies then we can also have it decanned and get macro shots, so not a total waste :p

I'm just going until the efficiency drops.
Most diodes will give a warning sign before they die, except for those pesky 405nm diodes that keep going up until they LED.

ARG, if I should win the raffle, please torture the diode in the name of science! :shhh:

If DJNY wins just make up some numbers for a torture test and send it to me......I'll send you $200 for it :na:

i was gonna rep you for your efforts here alex, but didn't want to change that 520 rep you have:gj:

I'm all for taking the risk and driving it as hard as possible. Until it stops increasing in power, that is - no point in killing it for the sake of killing.

That's the whole point of having a lot of people pay for it, right? If it dies we'll know exactly what not to do with our expensive diodes - and no one loses much in the end.

Else this becomes just another lottery...

No matter what....THIS LD will be in a Hand Held !! Anamorphic prisms are SMALL....and they correct the 445 nm beam....and they will very likely correct THIS 520 nm beam....If we need to.

OK....to start with....if correction is needed !!! The first generations WILL be larger than the typical 1 to 1 1/2 " diameter which we are used to .....like 2" in diameter for a corrected NDG-7475 HH unit !! Seems like an OK trade-off to me !! See the drawing of the " Green Extreme V1 "!!! This is ONE way to do it !!!

Perhaps...smaller prisms can be sourced....and that would deliver a smaller diameter Hand Held !!!

The point is that even IF the NDG-7475 needs correction....SO WHAT !! Correction can be done within the Hand Held format !! I am sure of this !!

Very interesting CDBEAM,

Will be interesting to see if these diodes will need correction.
Hopefully not.

Sorry for the offtopic,

but I saw that member swamidog is also a member on PL with a RIDICULOUS 1,542,889 post count since he joined in 2006.
That means on average he has posted 513 posts per day!

Is this for real?!?!

I had a similar idea, but with cylindrical lens'. The anamorphics would be hard to align to get the beam coming out the center of the host.

ARG, how low can you go with temperature for temp testing?

I want to get super cool, down to the negative Celsius. If we can get under 515, or even under 510, that'd be spectacular.
