Hi folks, I was planning to organize a combination group buy / DIY for this forum. I can get parts from (among others) AJK's group buys and I can also build complete modules for you.

About me:
I live in the Netherlands, a part of the world where the Euro dominates. I'm a computer scientist with lots of electrical knowledge. I can at least design and build reliable drivers for you. One of the drivers I designed and which proved reliable is one with which I can continuously adjust the diode current, either with a potentiometer or an analog modulation input. With a friend, I am currently co-designing a professional microprocessor controlled driver with USB, laser data communication, modulation, LCD display and lots of knobs and features.

Now as for this action feeler, I am thinking of not doing for one or more of the following reasons:
  • Bad euro->dollar rates
  • High shipping costs outside Europe
  • Customs confiscating stuff
  • Average or above average prices for laser diodes (most expensive part)
  • The plastic boxes I had in mind are crappy, and no flashlight host has been recommended to me yet (waiting for AJK on this)
  • Heat sinking problems (both diode and driver) (RED's only)
  • No precise measurement of output power (although I can calculate it with a detour)

If this action continues, I can at least build modules for very cheap prices, but they will not have the best build quality (unless maybe someone points me cheap metal flashlight hosts with quick shipping) On the other hand, I can also provide "Laser module kits" with all the electronic parts needed to build a laser, but not the mechanical parts (also no heatsinks).

Now, these are the prices at which I can get my parts:
  • [*]RED 650nm <200mW 300mA (NEC ND-3540A 16x)€ 20.00$ 31.00(canceled)
    [*]RED 650nm <275mW 420mA (Sony DRU-190A-BC 20x)€ 25.00$ 39.00
    [*]UV 405nm <30mW ~38mA (PS3 replacement part KES-400A)€ 25.00$ 39.00€ 22.50$ 35.00
[*]Aixiz€ 4.50$ 7.00

[*]Extra glass lens for Aixiz (2-3% more intensity and better collimation)€ 3.00$ 4.75(canceled)

[*]*NEW* DDL current source with heat sinking (for RED)€ 2.25$ 3.50*NEW*

[*]DDL current source (for UV)€ 1.50$ 2.25

[*]Adjustable supply (for RED)€ 6.00$ 9.25(canceled)

[*]Adjustable supply (for UV)€ 4.50$ 7.00(canceled)

[*]Plastic case 4.8x2.75x0.6'' and 9V battery clip (black/white/combo)€ 3.00$ 4.50

[*]*NEW* Built driver and test€ 7.00$ 11.00*NEW*
I will also ask a small price for the labor involved with some parts, like extracting diodes from the drives or soldering the electronic components on a PCB.

These would be the prices of DIY kits and pre-built units:

DIY kits:
  • [*]Red cheap$ 49.50$ 45.00$ 46.00
    [*]BR cheap$ 55.75$ 51.25$ 47.25
    [*]Red Pro$ 74.50$ 70.00(canceled)
    [*]BR Pro$ 65.25$ 60.75$ 56.75$ 52.00(canceled)

Modules:
  • [*]Red cheap$ 68.50(canceled)
    [*]BR cheap$ 74.75$ 70.75(canceled)
    [*]Red Pro$ 101.00(canceled)
    [*]BR Pro$ 91.75$ 86.75$ 72.75(canceled)

To make sure the message is clear, I will only continue with this action if there are enough people which are willing to buy parts from me.

Re: Feeler: GB/DIY RED's and Blu-ray's

[NEWS]

05/18/2008 The prices of the kits dropped by $4,50
05/22/2008 The price of the blu-ray diode dropped by $4,00
05/26/2008 I removed the complete modules because this feeler has entered a more opportunistic state and building those in these crappy boxes is just too bothersome. No one showed any interest in those anyway.
05/26/2008 I realized the glass lenses might very well be anti-reflective coated, which takes power away from the blu-ray. I'm not completely sure. Just to be on the safe side, I won't associate them with each other anymore. The price of the BR Pro kit dropped by $4,75 because now it has no glass lens.
06/08/2008 I cancelled the NEC RED, Glass lens and Adjustable drivers.( I've contacted the people who had one of these parts on their wish list.)
06/08/2008 I found a heatsink for $1.25 and added it to the price of the DDL driver for a RED diode. (no one had this driver on their wish list yet)

[Interested people] (wish list)

godmonkey2x Sony red,2x BR,5x Aixiz+5x lens
luke_jUnreachable1x BR cheap kit
dar303Paid2x Sony red
nvmextcPaid2x BR

Re: Feeler: GB/DIY RED's and Blu-ray's

A 'cheap' kit or module contains the minimum amount of parts required to make a laser. For example, a NEC diode, DDL driver and Aixiz.
A 'pro' kit or module contains the best parts from my list required to make a laser. For example, a Sony diode, adj driver, Aizix+glass lens. <edit>no glass lens in case of BR</edit>

A kit does not contain a plastic case or heatsinks, though they do include a comprehensive schematic with test values, explainations and building tips.

*bump*

If there are no more people interested by the end of may, I will cancel this feeler.

Re: Feeler: GB/DIY RED's and Blu-ray's

I can take two of these RED (Sony 115D diodes I presume?) 650nm <275mW 420mA (Sony DRU-190A-BC 20x bare diodes as long as they are carefully removed and properly packed!
I'm in EU (Sweden) and can pay with paypal.

Re: Feeler: GB/DIY RED's and Blu-ray's

The sony drives are type DRU-190A-BC which is presumably not the same as 115D. Here's a photo:

well, if it puts out 275mW stable I'm in for two anyway.

Re: Feeler: GB/DIY RED's and Blu-ray's

NOTICE

I decided on a rough deadline:

13th of June

This deadline is by no means fixed, and will depend on the demand.

I hope I can get a good amount of request for all parts. I will only start ordering a certain part when there are at least 10 pieces ordered (except the blu-ray diode). Depending on tendency of certain parts, I might decide to remove them altogether to stimulate requests for other parts.

Side note:
Unless you want the blu-ray diodes harvested and/or mounted in an Aixiz, you can probably get them cheaper from someone else in this thread: http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1210888983 (which also happens to be my secondary source for blu-rays)

Re: Feeler: GB/DIY RED's and Blu-ray's (OFFICIAL)

Newsflash.

The deadline stands.

I've added and removed some components. See the News section on the first page for more information:
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1210940278/0#1

I will calculate and publish the prices (incl. shipping) on Friday June 13th and I'll be collecting paypal payments from Saturday June 14th until Friday June 20th. :-[

I'm still in for 2 BR's harvested :)
Good to see this has finally come along.
