Those high powered 589nm units will not be cheap!! I'm curious as to if there is any pumping configuration to get sodium vapor to lase at 589nm. Would be fun to try assuming it is even possible!
No not cheap but some "light" at end of tunnel --I am told price is the same for any system between 589nm, 1000mW and 589nm , 2000mW--so a 1001mW and 1999 mW is the same price. CNI does make standard CW units up to 4500mW, 589nm.

I would guess there is one---I know to light up artificial stars in the mesosphere--a 589nm laser must be exact wavelength that matches sodium precisely as in 589nm laser guide star system and super tight tolerance as well. See LPF thread here: Serious Yellow - CNI HPL-589-Q, 8kW, 589.159nm +/-.001nm Laser Guide Star

Normal labby tolerance is 589nm + or minus 2nm which is very sloppy/poor accuracy control. To have and effect on sodium laser must be 589.159nm + or - 0.001nm --- not easy or low cost to accomplish in the real world/to do.

Interesting question ---will ask if anyone around here knows.

either way, such a lab laser will cost you a small fortune. I know, because I have/had a few. they're not cheap. but if you got the money then go for it. entry price is a few thousand, a watt or more will be pretty pricy.

I'm curious...how much were they asking? 0.001nm FWHM is incredible, I can't believe those excitation requirements are so stringent. In the work that I do a spectral width of 0.3nm is already at the best efficiency for exciting Rb and Cs electrons, but granted the conditions are at around an atm of pressure and temperatures of ~70ΊC, not conditions of the upper atmosphere. Hopefully sodium vapor in conditions near an atm and ~100ΊC isn't as picky with pump bandwidth.

Yes--am expecting a written quote sometime in next few days that lays out cost of all options available and costs associated with tighter and tighter specifications----right now am thinking best choice is MGL-W-589/2W/2000mW DPSS 589nm Yellow Laser with led power controller---I am told with that PSU/controller I can run it at any output power from 200mW to 2W/2000 mW. I can then pick and choose which spec for what aspect I want to buy and come up with cost. One thing I was told re: beam quality 589nm basic system is loose/sloppy tolerances like for light show use.
Excellent research quality beam costs more, however, still no charge for near TEM00
For perfect TEM 00---for that you pay more. 2W unit can have TEM00 perfect but lower power unit like <1000mW only available in near TEM00

Attached isa "Near TEM00", 589nm/800mW graphical representation. Basically, Near TEM00 is not quite the same precision circle and Gaussian energy distribution as TEM00 -- but it is very close.--is off but not horribly off at all.

When I get all the details I will post them.

Have asked for the cost, just out of curiosity, of 1 piece of the HPL-589.159-Q/0.2-1.2mJ/1-6W - up to 6W, 589.159 +/- .001nm water cooled actively Q-switched pulse laser with power supply PSU-HPL-Q-589.159 and water chiller.
Am sure wil be an outrageously high price because of the almost absolute specification--only thing better would be 589nm +/- 0.000nm --still interesting to know what this high end, Q switched:AOM (acousto-optic modulation), super-precision unit costs.

GR3EN's laser is being produced right now. Be aware production of 1 561nm GLP is taking 2 weeks, so you guys might be a little longer

But that's for 5mW, right? I'd rather get one of the 100mW ones that were going around a few years ago (especially for a wavelength so dim). Eh, when the time comes I'll make a BST post for it.

Thank you micheal, Alex, and styropyro, this GB sure has taken a lot of turns in a short period of time!
Who would have thought "vomit green" could be such a sought after wavelength.

I am now waiting for payment details from CNI for the 5 lasers and PGL driver. Looks like this will be going through!! I will be sending payment info through PM.

So here's the payment rundown:
"vomit green" laser - $260
shipping from CNI: - $85/5 - $17
shipping from me to buyer, assuming address is domestic: $10
Western Union fees: $6

Total: $293 by PP GIFT!! In payment put username - 561 and mention nothing about lasers. Your mailing address can be sent to me through PM.

Payment info sent to the three interested parties!

Also, for those interested in 671nm, take a look at these: Melles Griot 9167 01008 Laser Pumping Module w s 67 500C 100 NOS | eBay

If it is just the color you are looking for and not red DPSS, that is a cheap way to get the wavelength, and also at 500mW.

Lol 'vomit green' I guess that's one way to think of it.... It's just a bright yellow green. Honestly I don't find it all that special...it really isn't. It's far easier to make than lots if other wavelengths. Just a niche market for it just like yellow. Honestly, like yellow, 90% of them are crap unless they're actively cooled though. It'll behave similar to 593.5nm. Easy to make at low power, but above a few mW it needs a fair bit of cooling, as it gets pretty picky. 671 is similar, it just likes it cold.

"Vomit green" seems to be what everyone else is calling it here so I'm going with it. Yeah I fully expect these to be finicky, I just want to fill in the WL gap in my collection with what I feel will be a rare and cost effect opportunity. I'm getting two of these and one of them I'll likely rip apart to experiment with.
