What will be your test protocol for this one?  Please do a non-TEC test, as they are rarely used for non-dpss lasers.  Once you do a ramp, at 3 or 5 mA increments, you will be able to see the point where the efficiency has a dip (sometimes slight, sometimes pronounced).  Choose an operating point slightly below this and run the diode for a few days.  If it lasts, it should be good enough for pointer use at that operating point.

Only about 1.5W has to be dissipated, so the heatsink required is not that large after all.

A duration test would be a good thing to do. Running it for a week without failure at (say) 200 mW will probably be more useful information for the average builder than knowing a diodes absolute maximum capability where you have no idea if that will last for a minute, hour or month.

As for the TEC part - a large passive heatsink will probably be just fine. As i understand DDL's TEC tests do not actually go below ambient temperature much, for the results the difference will be marginal.

Let me know if you still plan on lending one for a ramp test. I'll plot it against all the diodes in my database so far for comparison :)

While we're all waiting I have a question. Whats a safe current to run these at compared to the senkat diodes? I guess more specifically, what would you say is an appropriate resistance to use in the DDL regulator circuit?

I ask because I have a senkat diode breadboarded up right now with four AAA batteries and 5 ohms of resistance (in the DDL circuit) and my voltmeter broke and I don't know how much current it's putting out, just that it's the right amount for a senkat diode. But these Phazor diodes are supposed to run at a much higher current correct? So what do you think I can use in place of the 5ohm resistor?

(or should I just buy a new voltmeter and save myself the trouble ::))

dont use 4 AAA's. they sag as SOON as you put them in. I heard of this, and saw it first hand on a LPM, with 4 AAA's, your power is just dropping every second its on.. its scary.

the smart thing to do is 6 AAA's, or 2 RCR123's (3.6v)

dont use a 9v battery, as that will sag too

anyhow, to calculate how much current your DDL is putting out, just do 1.25 / the resistance your using

1.25 / 5 = .25

that means you are outing .25 amps, or, 250mA
