Re: DONE *** Feb. 9, 2008  NEW BluRay GB... *** D

Well, my laser flashlight build took its first fall today. :'(
I had my blue ray diode module in it at the time so I picked it up and turned it on (fingers crossed)..... And it still works (I could have probably thrown the unit ;D). But now it has a bit of a ghost light to the dot (the orange-ish light). Well at least it still works and nothing is really broken.

you my friend, have sorta damaged you diode. Check the forum, and Sam's laser faq, I remember something about that on here....

(gasp) Is it going to be alright doc. :'( Please, tell me it is going to live. :'( Noooooooooooooo. :D

I think I know the general Idea of what is going on. The blue laser is making something else lase too. None of the glass in the window is broken so it hs to do with something behind it.

We're seeing this yellow/orange light pattern around many of these units. Even those that haven't been dropped. It doesn't appear to be effecting the power output or signaling an early death. It just seems to be "there". Usually you can only really see it at short distances. Two out of my three blu-rays show this pattern and they are doing just fine. It may even be that you just didn't "see" it until you became hyper-aware because you were worried about dropping it or that sometimes it just happens with time.

Peace,

Mine has a bit of an orange haze around the point too, I haven't had any problems with it so far

Sometime in the dim and distant past I posted about the yellow square of light that could be seen with the blue ray, In my case it was because I was just a smidge low on voltage, with rechargables giving me an extra 1.2V the artifact went away...... Check your voltage, overhead for regulator + 4.5V for the diode + a volt or two for longevity.

OK, I have a problem with my blu-ray diode.

Nothing, zilch, nada. No led, no puff of smoke

I have mounted 2 sld1236VL's without issue and 1 phazor (all reds) without any problems. I trimmed and soldered them to the rkcstr drivers and they have all worked, no major issues.

However, the blu-ray was harvested for me and mounted in an aixis housing and had leads attached. I attached the leads to a 38ma driver (rkcster again). tried attaching batteries and nothing.

Any suggestions.

It may be a battery issue (i hope) or it may be toasted (don't know how though)

I tried running it off 3 AAA's, but the voltage isn't high enough I'm sure. I tried 6 AAA's and measured it at about 7.5 volts and again tried, but still nothing.

Help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Isn't the one you bought a PHR-803T diode ? If so, I THINK they require a little bit more current than 38ma to hit lasing threshold...

It was from this group buy thread, which is why I posted here. I didn't think these were the high ma versions, but if it is, I'd be pleasantly surprised. I'll try that.

I had one from this buy that didn't light up fully until it hit 80ma (lights matches burns stuff)....But it did glow right from a level lower that 38ma...... so no glow at all surprises me a bit.

Have you tried the diode test setting on your DVM? connect the leads one way round you should get all zeros the other way should give you a reading of around 1.45'ish...I f you get that then all is not necessarily lost.

I hate PS3 Blue Rays!

With the first two, at least i know what i did wrong.. But i just lost another for no apparent reason.

Not only that, it almost killed my boost driver, as if it was an open circuit. I heard a whining noise, so i turned it off immediatelly, and the regulator was VERY hot. Luckily it survived. But if i do the diode test, it's NOT an open circuit!?! :-?

The PS3 diodes are really weird. The PHR gives a much more rugged feeling.

Still no yellow orange anything tho.

I feel for you, but good to know I'm not the only one having issues with these things. Must just be very very touchy.
