Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Buy - COLLECTING PAYMENTS!

I have a suggestion on how we can make it TOTALLY community based. Most of us don't need 10, and many of us don't even need 5 (me included) so why don't we set up a distributor for each location on the globe in which there is a high concentration of laser enthusiasts and have them receive a large number. They could then distribute them in smaller numbers.

If this goes ahead, I'd happily do it for the Brits. Maybe this overcomplicates things, but I've got a pair of builds coming up and I'd love them to have one of these focus adapters but I can't justify spending $30 for 2 focus adapters with no idea what'll happen to the other 3 and I get the feeling others feel the same. If, however, I could order a fairly large quantity and know I could then redistribute them I'd dive right in.

I appreciate the advice but to me that doesnt really make any sense...how would we set up distributors???? remember, the shop gives us prices on quantity ordered. so if we do what you are talking about, its like 4-5 different people making individual orders and then handling their own GB. that doesnt make it easier or cheaper its just running 5 GB's instead of 1.

How I see it, you can first gather up interest on your own...then once you have a finalized quantity, you gather funds and then take a spot on the reservations list...then for example if you pick up 50 pcs... your total cost will be less than 250 because the price refects packages of 10 and of course shipping costs is less since instead of 5 packages of 10 I am now shipping 1 package of 50. You then distribute it to the interested parties on your end. the amount they paid you will be higher than the amount you pay me in order to cover of the cost of shipping from you to your parties.
EDIT: basically its like this, instead of $50 X 5 = $250, you pay for (50 X price of each unit) + 15 dollars shipping = less than the $250 which will have been paid to you by your parties.

I hope that made sense, but this GB was organized originally by rhd and im sure he thought about the whole process thoroughly and decided this way would be best for everyone.

also I am in no way bashing your idea, I just really dont see how/what that would do to help us. Maybe you can clarify that a bit more.

Yeah, you've misunderstood slightly. I meant you would ship out to the various distributors at the original cost or slightly reduced (for the reason you stated, flat rate shipping) once interest was shown by the amount of people within the country. Once a distributor has volunteered, you could put in the GB "For ___ single orders contact _____" (e.g. "For single orders to Britain contact JaiNobeZ") and then people could contact me and PP me the money and I could order the finalised quantity from you and distribute as appropriate.

Basically, the only difference between what I'm suggesting and what is currently in place is that you put in the OP a bunch of distributors for orders of >5 and then people can place orders of >5 and select the distributor nearest to them and the rest will be figured out between distributor and customer. I'm just basically working to ensure that it's not $30 for a pack of 5 when only one will be used as nobody wants to pay that. Trying to ensure everyone can get them regardless of how few they want.

Just wondering... rhd and jakeGT, you guys don't generally build to sell (as far as I'm aware - although I don't flip through the B\S\T often) so what are you using your large quantities for?

EDIT: Alternatively they could wire you the money via Paypal (including a word which must be present at the beginning of the transaction description) and bypass me altogether... but then things get complicated as i'll want shipping paid for... idk, this'll take some working out, but will work out better ultimately at ensuring the whole forum can have at least a few lasers with our special focus knob.

Ahhh i get what your saying. That would be a good idea. I will contact rhd about doing that for various geographical regions as well as another USA member willing to ship out small quantities. I think I would limit to 1 distributor per continent. as to make it easier on my life.

also i cant speak for rhd or jake but personally i build lasers all the time...its a hobby after all. but you cant be pack rat and keep every single laser you make. it would be too much, so you gotta sell some off here and there to make room for new builds. buying large quantities just ensures that I have plenty on hand to use on whatever builds I think fits it and for any future builds I might think I need. I would hate to have a great idea for a new laser that would look best with this custom focus adapter...only to have to move it from another build over...that kinda stinks... you ruin one build to finish another. at this price it's worth keeping a few lying around just for those kinda moments...besides. $50 for 10 will keep me satisfied at least for 6 months muahahaha

then maybe after that i will do this GB again....

Ok. I was basically checking whether it was going to serve as a lasting supply or whether they too were to be redistributed.

I could be a British distributer if you'd like, although I expect I'd do a slightly better job at it after my exams are finished in June.

I would suggest saving the "suppliers" plan for the second run. Since this is the first attempt it might be a good idea to stick with the more simple plan of 5+ preorders. When you have people wanting 1 thats a lot to keep track of and alot of people to keep informed. If you run into a problem you a lot better off with only 20 people involved than with 100.

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Buy - COLLECTING PAYMENTS!

Hey guys. Just started a new job today, so I may be a bit slow to keep up with this thread.

My two cents - I think the 5pcs and 10pcs lots are cool as is. If someone wants 20pcs (or more, in multiples of 10), I think that's fine - provided they are a semi-regular user here (just so that we don't have new registrants committing to a bunch and not following through)

If someone wants 20, 30, whatever, I think that's ok. Everyone knows the risks with first-adopting, and the project files have been posted in the OP, so everyone can open them, take a look, and see if they spot any errors themselves (though I think we've vetted the design fairly well)

Jainobez. You and some other people over in England could just throw in on a 5 or 10 pack if need be, would make it a lot easier

Good suggestion jakeGT. May do that, but, as always, I think i'll wait.

@Helios: Yes, you have a perfectly valid point. Also my exams will be over then so it'll be easier for me to devote more time and attention to.

I think we should stop the GB until we find a clear solution :D

....a "solution" ?

Sorry guys, but I've been away from this thread for a little while, and I'm confused as to what the "problem" we need to solve is ;)

Is the "problem" that people can't buy 1 or 2 at a time?

If that's the problem, then I think it's pretty ridiculous to suggest that we stop the GB on account of it. From day 1 this has been undertaken with the objective of splitting the purchase into packs of 10. That's why this is so cheap - volume. We lowered it to 5.

If you guys would like, we could decrease our order size from 200 to 20, and then everyone could purchase just one focus knob. It would cost about $30 per knob, but it's doable ;)

In all seriousness, 5 or 10 packs (or multiples of 10) are the deal here, it's too much organizational overhead to micro-manage this into tinier portions. If you want 2 knobs, wait for a few months until some of the members who buy 10 decide to sell a couple of their extras on the BST forum. It will probably happen. Apart from that, I'd like not to clutter this thread with the chatter back and forth about smaller lots. It's just not practical to do it that way.
