I believe there is a thread on here talking about it in fact. as far as crystal degradation or simply fragility/not meeting MTBF requirements I don't know why they didn't get produced.

589 is not a common wavelength, has little demand, and can only be made on a very fragile and complex system by generating two lasing lines from a vanadate (1319 and 1064), summing them and then doubling the result. they're very hard to make and must maintain a specific temperature (or it wont lase) and are only about 1% efficient compared to a green which is probably closer to about 32%. I'm not saying you shouldn't buy one...but keep in mind that these lasers are very complex and only came around within the last few years. As awesome as they are, take it with a grain of salt and respect that they aren't going to be as reliable or long lasting as a typical more common DPSS system. If you buy one, don't be suprised if strange things happen while you run it....anything as simple as the kind of battery you're using can change how it behaves. Just recently I believe bloom got one and it has a multiline issue (or blessing )

they're quite the picky lil suckers!
I see.....
mate
That really helped.
How about the 473 DPSS ?
Does it have a similar problem as with 589?

473nm light is produced similarly to green 532nm but not quite. there's a little and a lot of difference. 808 pumping a Nd:YVO4 to 946, and then doubling that with an LBO (or KNBO3) crystal to 473. However the 946 line is smaller than 1064, and it competes with the 1319 line (used in the yellow) causing loss of energy. plus the vanadate is more opaque to these other wavelengths furthering the drop. they're pretty much the same as a green when well made, but like the yellow, they tend to be harder to make, especially while retaining stability in higher powers for these reasons, as well as the ever present problem of heat and a slightly more difficult alignment. Any DPSS laser will be fragile to drops and things so be careful with them, lest you send them to an early date with the reconstruction specialist.

Ok I went from 100 to 500 to 800mW of green, now you tempt fate buy saying they have 1W. I might have to go a semester without college books!

Decisions decisions... This thing better last forever

While I trust this company for what others say I still can not turn a blind eye to some of the posts I have been reading... After all ~$500 is worthy investment for something that is more novelty than practical (like an upgrade to vehicle, college, loans etc...)
Is the host reliable also? Solid metal heat sink in front (under fins)?

Someone please calm me down and tell me they are quality units. I have no problem investing in reasonable quality. I know this was a few years ago.

I'm still in it for the 589. Hopefully NO issues occur. And my 100mW has a really nice beam at night, but during the day, I can see it, but I can't.

CNI produces extremely high quality lasers, and if you EVER have a problem with it during the warranty period, they repair it for you. Their hosts are really solid, and feel like batons, and they are very well constructed. Dragonlasers, Laserglow, and a few others resell lasers for CNI.

Check out my review.
The PGL series is trustworthy.
CNI churns out alright products at an alright price.
Just don't expect too much from the looks .

I just took over 20 photos and a video of just the host. I am now going to various places to take beamshots outside. Since this laser is bright enough, I dont need any fog. Also brought matches and will stop by the store for balloons.

Suggestion :
Fill the balloon with hydrogen ,some magnesium powder and a bit of lighter fluid before you pop them .
It's EPIC!

PLEASE DO IT OUTSIDE and have a hose ready!

Awww.....
Well there's always the potassium nitrate , alcohol , boric acid , sodium chloride , and strontium nitrate cocktail soaked in wool for COOL fire rainbows .
No explosions.
I promise

All you have to do is put a little piece of steelwool in the container and light them with your laser.
Cool stuff.
If you got a projector , you can even make a Lasershow with this stuff

Since you went through all the powers, do you think it makes a lot of difference in beam brightness? How many times would you say the 500mW is brighter than the 100mW? What about the 800mW?

Also can you or anyone here see the beams pointed at the sky during the day (no need to be a specially sunny day)?

Sorry for asking so many questions... I'm very unsure if I actually want a high power 532nm or not. Was more inclined to wait for the 1W direct diodes but this thread makes me want them now, LOL

Default Re: CNI GB Round 2 FEELER

He never actually owned any of those. I can tell you however that it puts a 100mW laser to shame. Also brightness doubles when output quadruples. So...

100 x 4 = 400
800 400 = 2

So 400 is twice as bright as 100, and 800 should be like 2.5 times the brightness.

ps- I just woke up, my maths could be wrong.

Default Re: CNI GB Round 2 FEELER

Damn this thread moved fast. Depending on when this GB would happen and if it's not too late I'd be curious what a 593.5 GLP or other lower powered model would run since bloom said a high powered PL-III-C would start at around $900 several pages back. I'd something to fill the (small) WL gap between my 589 and 594 HeNe to complete my yellow collection. I have a feeling it may be cheaper go to through LG for a one off though.

FWIW those wanting super high powered 589s unless you're willing to pay out the nose $xxxx for a lab style unit 80mw is about as much as you're going to reliably get out of a handheld and those cost just under $600 USD before shipping in the previous GB. 80mw is still faintly visible here in my home office area with some sunlight coming in the window and 120w of overhead lights on. In a dark room or at night it's quite spectacular.
