When do I have to decide if I will get the 400mW green handheld? And how long will it take to get to me in europe?

If you want to get on GB #7, you probably have to decide very soon and contact Glenn before CNI ships.

If you want to wait for GB #8 (I'll be getting a ~400mW PGL-III-C-532 in #8) you have a while to decide. When I got on the forum, I was rather unsure of the process and missed GB #6.

But once you get to know people here, who's trustworthy and has a good reputation (such as Glenn) - it's a lot easier to throw your hat in the ring and save some money (even if you have to wait) on one of these group buys.

In summary, this one is nearing its conclusion. The order has already been placed. Glenn may be able to get you in on the tail end of it (he said he PMed you...)

If not, there will likely be another shortly.

Well, while we're waiting -- Glenn, did CNI get back to you on the PGL-III-C-671s?

I'm hoping that if they did, they gave you a better price than they gave me.

what's the price they gave you? I'm also interested in a 671nm but I am still totally unsure about what power and host I want... all depends on the prices and details

peace & thanks

cmak, I'm a bit reluctant to even say what CNI quoted me because 1) as was explained earlier, 671 DPSS shouldn't be much harder to make than 532 DPSS, 2) I think they were trying to grab me for as much as I could because of the interest.

Either way, it was far more than yellow 589s or blue 473s. By around twice. (200mW.) Which I think is just crazy. Because it turns out, this IS a normal product they offer, not custom - and the 671 lab units are in line in cost with 589s, 473s and 532s. So I think something was 'funny' in their quote to me.

So before I even mention a cost I want to see what Glenn can get so that people don't get dissuaded right off of a potential group buy for them.

I figure Glenn has made so many purchases so far that they might give him better numbers. I really want a handheld 671.

I totally understand. I agree with your thoery about how the DPSS process is extremely similar to that of 532nm Green DPSS's (however there are a few minor kinks...) and I agree that with the ridiculousness of the quote they seem to have given you, it would probably be best, for the sake of maintaining this GB idea, to not mention any further details of it.

Also I did some heavy research (Google :p) and found some serious lack of availability of 671nm lasers, and wherever I did find them, I found some similar (although not as extreme as to rival 589/473nm's) prices that just don't quite seem to make sense.

Thanks and have a great day

The 1,342nm (which is what is being doubled for 671nm) is a weaker line from ND:YVO4 - I'm not sure how much weaker, but this is likely affecting the price. A more powerful and/or touchier crystal and diode setup may be necessary to produce the same 200mW of 671nm that a more cheaply produced 532nm setup can. I'm unsure of whether or not the doubling process occurs any differently in 671nm systems...

twhite,

The thing that makes me wonder about the pricing is that they've got a 100mW labby 671 for around $535. Switching to a PGL-III-C host shouldn't more than double that. And I have a hard time believing that 671s are that much more expensive than 594s or 589s. Still want to see if Glenn can get better numbers. For all I know, they might have quoted me a similar price for a 532 as "some guy off the street"...

Of course there could be something I'm missing here, like the requirement of the pump diode.

I'm curious too, and I'm also interested in hearing from someone who's familiar with the 671nm creation process.

EDIT: And Glenn, do you have prices for the PGL-III-M-532 series?

Survivor, if you read the last 20 posts or so, you'll see that CNI is still working on the lasers, and we're all waiting patiently for our high quality over-spec toys. ;-)

Which I trust, are coming soon. (Thanks all for the patience!) And I have already gotten several folks in for GB #8 so that order will go out in a week. -Glenn

I've been waiting for GB #8 to start, checking the GB section for new threads every day (multiple times per) and here you are saying that it's already been started? I want in!

Hope it's not too late!

cmak, I think GB#8 is kind of like "GB#7.5", as Glenn told me that GB#9 is going to start in about 3 weeks! o_O

I gotta pick which one i wanna get my PGL-III-532 400mW in. I haven't even gotten my GB#7 lasers yet and another GB is starting!

wait what? If that's "GB #7.5" and GB#9 is starting in three weeks, then I have three questions:

1) :wtf:

2) when is GB#8?

3) where are the threads regarding this! I WANT IN :D

thanks for the info, Aryntha

peace & thanks

whoa, my bad.. I shouldn't have said anything. :(

I'll let Glenn say what's happening when. Ignore what I said!

All I know is that you probably won't have to wait long! I just found this out by PMing him as far as when I should get my $ ready for a PGL-III-C 532 400mW. I know of no threads yet!

GB 7.5? yes, I did accept a few orders for a GB #8 as I know the #7 will be here soon, and folks were wanting to get it going, but true, I didn't start a thread for it, yet. we are starting one w/ prices same as last time... -Glenn
