Wow these 473nm work really strange! If I had known that before, I wouldn´t have bought one! :scowl:

Usually after you "burn them in a bit" the problems disappear, & the laser will function normally (except for out-put fluctuations due to ambient temp. changes) just like any other laser. rob

Rob - I was thinking EXACTLY that, for the last day or so, but was a bit afraid to say it because it sounded so odd.

My PGL-III-A/AqPro seemed to respond better after "burn-in", too. It's only been getting better with age. Really.

It seems like there really is a "burn-in" phenomenon with 473s. I wonder why.

I tested mine out today a bit after reading about yours. I started off by warming it up in bed with me this morning. It was VERY bright at 90mW when I turned it on but then after maybe a minute it was only putting out 10mW and in tem01 . I left it on for another minute and down to 7mW. I then put it in the freezer for a little bit. The laser did 16mW steadily for a minute in mode. I then let the laser sit for a couple hours and go back room temp (70) When I turned it on in room temp it starts at 26mW and slowly climbs to 95mW. Once it reaches this point I need to follow strict duty cycles or it will overheat and slip into tem01 dropping quickly to 15-20mW. One thing is for sure about these PGL lasers. They are EXTREMELY temperature sensitive and they require careful duty cycles. The two 473nm Aquaries style lasers I have owned were way more stable and would handle staying on for a very prolonged period of time without any adverse effects. Perhaps if they pulsed the PGL blues they would operate at higher powers and wouldn't be such little sissies with temperature.

I'm glad to read this. My CNI 473 was easily TEM01 last night but tonight is near TEM00 shooting over 150 feet. These are a spook depending on temperature.

I don't know Luke. I'm just happy that the longer I use mine & carefully burn-it-in watching duty cycles, the better it seems to operate, with higher out-put mW's. Mine hit 86mW's today, & I didn't notice any temp. variation in the entire length of the laser. Go figure, IDK that's for sure. Just carefully experimenting.

Thats, right, looks like I won't have to RMA it after all. :) I'm relieved. Really relieved. And get to move on to waiting for my PGL-III-532-400 in GB#9. :)

I think I'm actually going to go outside tonight and see what I can do with the 473 for distance.

Thanks for the help everyone, though - and the input from everyone else on 473 too.. Looks like we're figuring out a lot more about the peculiarities of duty cycle and temperature with these lasers.

My 473nm PGL III rated at 20mW is outputting a continous around and above 50mW and has peaked at 66mW:D It hasnt dropped below 40mW for me, welll within and above spec. I suppose it just depends on the individual unit:D

EDIT: We have a new peak of 74mW ladies and gents, er well probably just gents:D

Wow! I was expecting it to die when it went down to 12mw. Once that thing warms up it's a beast!
