If the wallwart costs $25 extra, can you drop that from my order, please? sorry, I thought it would be much cheaper. (I can simply power it with 2x18650's, right?)

You can, but you might get erratic behavior, especially when the batts get low, which in turn stresses the tube and supply. And they'd have a shorter lifetime.

the wall wart is expensive because it's a good quality, low-ripple, fused, and internally regulated one. Rather than a $15 alternative....and it's quite long. And has a free plug on the end so it doesn't require any solder. I'll see if I can post a picture of my own 9V setup.

I might be able to do without the Alden, if that will decrease the cost appreciably. If not, then keep it on there.

not to worry. you shouldn't need it for one of these. you can likely get by with a far lower gauge with these. they're not to bad. Aldens are more for large laser heads. I'm whipping up a wiring post. Ive had it a long time coming anyway. I'll link to it when I finish it shortly. lunch break first.

1. Will this work with the tube

2. Can I get a ballast resistor with it?

yes and yes. that supply is the one I linked to in the OP. if you want one then let me know and I'll throw it in. everyone who gets a tube will get holders, solder clips and a ballast with it

I'd really like to know why these won't work properly with batteries. I wanted one to make a handheld. What about using 3 batts and a linear regulator?

You even said previsouly that we could use a cheap wall wart... now we need a $25 one?

How much will the cheap wall wart or the batts decrease the life of the tube? I don't really mind if it's like from 10000h to 100h.

There's nothing wrong with it. but just don't expect it to run a long time, i'm not sure how much it would draw, a few quality panasonic 18650s we use for our diodes would likely supply plenty of current. Isaac used to run his on batteries with a small regulator IIRC.

depends on your definition of cheap i guess. you don't need the one I'm offering. Its just for people who want it to come complete for convenience.

I find this particular one is a good clean and reliable one that is a ready option for you if you choose to use it. I just recommend one that is well regulated to help keep the input steady so the tube doesn't get a lot of noise and oscillate/stress the power supply (which also results in a cleaner beam). I've tried a few different ones, and this one works well for the price. it's a large 9V 800mA plug and is from a local radioshack. but i've tried a few from amazon and ebay I had already, and got mixed results.

this is probably along the right line of thinking. batts are fine, but I just wouldn't feed them directly to the power supply. and when the batteries get low it causes lots of problems, flickering of the tube for example, which left alone can cause bad things to happen.

Running it off the wall will give you the best results. that's why industrially there are no HeNes that run on batteries.
