i feel bad for treating the poor thing so horribly. blahh. well my next build will be similar(sorry).

still having a hard time accepting that it instantly died. worked great, put in pocket and drove home, got home and was super dim(when shined on far away objects it looks like there is some type of leakage also)

Yeppe... that's a dead diode alright... wanna see a picture of one? ::)

You're in the good big happy family of 'Diode Killers' now ;) Don't worry we don't bite :p

I think I now have about 5 dead BluRays.. ;D

Did you measure your current ? Did you have a capacitor across the diode ??

My calculations indicate that you didn't have too much current using a 47 ohm series resistor. Unless something shorted out bypassing the resistor. Are you sure the resistor was wired in series with the diode ?

Mike
didnt measure current. no cap, only diode and resistor in series. i know i did drop it just before i put it in my pocket, but i tested it after i dropped it and it was fine. my wireing and soldering is flawless. im really thinking something in my pocket pushed the button for the whole drive home and it just over heated. (hope so or my next build wont last a week!)

My Dorcy sorta died a while ago :( Thought the diode went out but it's the dorcy booster dropped from 6.1 volts to 4.65. I now have 5 mW .......... I've never had a boost die at 45 mA.

As about my video... the diode is not a freak... it's actually just around average... :)

The thing was focused to a small dot and I myself couldn't see if it is actually at the right spot... you'll see that the match was moving until I found the right focal point and then it lit in a second or so. The lens is nothing more than the smaller AixiZ brass module in another block to create a bigger heatsink. It's not ideal but FAR from it actually... the lens is so bad that there is a halo out the end... not sure if it was at all visible in the video ;)

:-?

Wow! That's not too cool... maybe the thing wasn't meant to be pushing out that much voltage... it could have been a saturated inductor? :-/ It's really weird... and I was hoping I would do that setup myself too... Oh well... back to the drawing board I guess :(

Does that mini Aixiz have glass lens ??  I do see a slight halo with my larger plastic lens but not too bad.
What color was the match ?  I reported that I see the BR come through a black balloon before it pops.  This is interesting light.

Mike

Funny thing about the Dorcy circuit, I see switching pulses on the center leg of the IC but no pulses on the coil -- Somehow doesn't make sence. I've got to look into this.

i feel more accepted now :p. only thing that sucks is the wait time for diodes. i have one left (3 on order from you right now)which i will hopefully have mounted in my "special case" tomorow or tuesday.

edit: wtf i think theres red mixed in with the blurr of violet...maybe i was wrong about my "flawless soldering". ill post a crappy pic in a little bit.

Mike, I can't tell for sure but I think it's a plastic lens... and one element for sure...

The halo is there for sure though...

As about the match, it's a 'local-mart' brand red paper match-book match :)

I've had these ones for about 3 years... so they're not the freshest of matches either... and I have a whole BOX of them... I bought them during the hurricane season here and all the 'smaller' solutions were already taken

I have seen this happen to one of mine before... It's the result of a pushed pin... since these things are SO close to each other it's really easy to get one touching the other... and that could cause you heating problems too... so be careful how you connect to these ;)

Very Interesting -- If the red and blu leads were shorted, the red would have pulled most of the available current because of its lower junction voltage. It may have shorted when you dropped it and that took out the blue too.

is that red a sympton of a dead/dying diode? im thinking the wire soldered to the violet pin has shifted a tad bit...

Buster --

Carefully inspect that Flawless ;D soldering for a connection to the red. If it is shorted, the red will pull most of the current and the blu may not be at threashold to lase. The blu does not look red.

thanks for the help guys, this forums owns. yeah im a tad bit color blind. i had a hard time telling if that dim color was red or not. i asked my dad and he told me it looked lime green

heres the best pic i could get..also notice the odd shape the violet is projecting in and notice the [red?] in the center

Welll ---  One of us or more is color blind.  I don't see the red on my screen.  I do see a typical blinded camera photo of a BR diode.  That halo effect may be due to a dirty lens or a misalligned diode in the housing or ..........    Are you using the Aixiz module ??

Is that a picture of the dye or of the output? It looks to me like the diode is fine but not powered enough to lase... :-?

If it's the output... then you have a case of catastrophic optical damage (COD)...

Sorry... :(
