You should be fine, but I don't recommend doing that. A laser diode will behave like a standard LED before it starts to lase. the point where it turns from a LED to a laser is called the lasing threshold. If you could look into the diode with a magnifying glass without discomfort, it was definitely not lasing, you will be fine, just don't do it again, hehe.

Daedal - whay kinda envelopes did you buy ? Also - keep in imnd that anything weighing 13oz or less does NOT NEED Customs forms. You will run across some...erm...interesting peeps in the post office that do not know their own rules for shipping. At the post office I frequent, ONE guy continued to insist that I use customs forms - the finaly time, after I made certain of the regulation concerning customs paperwork - I told him, "NO - you are wrong" and he got very upset with me saying, "Well, don't blame me if they get refused by international mail services." LOL !!! He was VERY wrong, so do't fall for that line from those schmucks (my apologies if any of our fantastic forum members are postal workers). That paperwork is a pain in the arse....BUT I did figure out a way to beat the system, as it were - I printed off many many many labels for each international shipment, so I could stick them to each sheet of that sooooooper long, multi-page document :) hehehehe Cut down on my work time a lot !

USPS can't track an elephant in 6" of fresh snow :mad: The USPS tracking number means nothing because we're all surprised when it arrives. The USPS doesn't know right now that they have my package in transet !!!!

But don't old CD-RW drives use IR instead of visible beams? I thought I've read someone mention that an IR diode will look like a tiny dot/line, but that's it. If so, [idiot]hopefully I wasn't magnifying powerful IR into my eyes[/idiot]. Anyone know a theoretical power of a 4x-8x CDRW diode straight on a 1.5v battery?

If I do recall, it's about 50mW when running to burn discs at that speed, so you could have been exposed to anything up to that. On an old 1.5v battery alone, it probably wasn't enough to hit the lasing threshold, but there's no way to know for sure. It's still a risk to vision.

Rule of thumb...

NEVER LOOK INTO A LASER BEAM OR DIODE... EVER!!!

As about the packages now... half were shipped... the second half is still waiting for me to finish up the rest of the labeling and stuff...

This should all be done by Monday :)

Thanx all for your patience;

:D :D :D

Glad you guys got it already... The next batch was sent out today... and the last will be sent out tomorrow... I'm VERY sorry it's taking this long, but I honestly have so many things going on I'm lost in my own little spiral of events and priorities...

I thank you all VERY much for the extreme patience you have had with me... thank you VERY much.

A second GB will soon be started for these... I suggest you guys start testing your creations because once the next order goes in... it'll be yet another wait for the next batch to get ordered. ;)

Start testing and salvaging... those of you that ordered complete units should have them out withing the week... and the salvaged diodes should be out in a day or 2 :)

Thank you again for letting this happen, and I'm pleased to say that this is the BEST bunch of guys I have ever dealt with... everyone was top notch and highly professional. I had no drama and everyone was incredibly patient. Just how GB's should be ;)

Regards;
DDL

They're here ! Almost anti-climatic ! LOL !! Excellent packaging...not up to the Pseudo standards of ruggedization, but still very good :D A big thank you for getting them out so swiftly, and for organzing this GB to begin with - there are a few anxious folks out there waiting for these diodes !

;D

SenKat, the diodes were already protected, and the package was tough enough... and it was bubble wrapped... the box was tough and then it was further wrapped with bubble wrap to tighten it in place... I think that if it fell from a plane and got hit by a car's front bumper, it would have made it through unscathed! ;D ;)

VERY glad you got them man... and let me know how that **Wink Wink** project goes... :p

I am almost sad I didn't order a complete unit. So afraid I'll fry them. But too busy to work with it now. I think the packaging was awesome. I didn't even know what was inside until I opened it. I shook my box quite abit and didn't hear any sound so I was wondering if it was empty. These units are really SMALL!!

Thanks again for this really smooth GB!

ditto here... got the first of my 2 today, and the packaging was bombproof... Daedal, you should run some electronics supplier's shipping department! too bad you wouldn't last 10 minutes in most of 'em ;) ;D

Thanks!

(now if I only had my supply circuit decided on... so many ways to squeeze out that current!)
