On a side note, may I ask what power source you use for your BR-diode? Portable solution?
I used 4 x 1.5V button cells, check the multimedia section for a photo.

Perhaps a lame excuse, but given a set temperature a voltage and current regulator will do the same thing. As long as you aren't planning on using your laser in some extreme temperature change, I don't see why you couldn't use a voltage regulator.
Fair comment. The problem is if you try to adjust the output optical power, a small change in voltage can cause a large change in power. In contrast, the power is proportional to the current (above threshold) so it is much easier to adjust the output power in small amounts without over driving and killing the diode. The output power is always specified in terms of current in the datasheets because it is much more predictable and consistant between devices.

Given that the 7805 is not adjustable I guess it is a moot point (another reason to use a 317).

In practice I just used a current limiting resistor due to size constraints of my case - I wanted my pointer small! Either an adjustable voltage or current regulator would be a better solution than just a resistor, but it requires extra batteries to raise the voltage into the regulator, and more room in the case to mount the circuit.

OK I'm going to ask a question that just begs to be asked. Why doesn't someone design and share with us a steip up circuit for driving this off two AA's or AAA's that way those of us that do wanna keep our lasers in nice small packages can do so. I hate rectangular lasers. I like simple round (cyndrilical) laser projects. I know that it is very simple to increase the voltage and decrease the amperage coming from say two AA's. will this work and if not why?

Without a load on my red driver I measure 5.4v. Isn't that sufficient for the BR? Looks like max I can get is 5.4v and the current I have over kill on that. Stress the word 'kill' there. Has anyone tried to play-n-play from the red to a BR?

How about just running them off 2 or 3 Lithium ion batteries?
AA=14500
AAA=10440

3.6v*2= 7.2v
3.6v*3= 10.8v

using LiPO4 3.0v cells
we can get 6v and 9v respectively.

They will need further voltage and/or current regulation since their voltage tends to start high and then drop with use.

With a ~3v(or less) drop from a lm317 and another diode to drop 0.7v or so it shouldn't be too hard to hit the right voltage and current

I think the dorcy metal gear runs on 3 AAA?
But might as well use 9v cells and save the trouble
or 3 x 3.0v cr123a primaries

Boost converters do not supply a steady enough current. At least not small enough within the 10mA op range of a blu-ray diode. Further regulation would make the circuit even more inefficient. Correct me if I am wrong on this.

I'm stubborn that way. I will not use a 9v battery. it's too big and bulky and the odd shape makes it impossible to shove into a circular hole! (besides usin a sledge) I like your thinking with the rechargables though. It should work. that or I'll freakin use the doggone button cells!

I had originally intended to construct a step up circuit (Texas Instruments make some tiny controllers, eg TPS61071). A boost converter will work fine, but you need to carefully select an output capacitor to avoid too much ripple.

Lol those buttons don't last very long though but you can get like 100 a pop at dx for only $3.
Stack 6 and you have 9v the size of an AA and loads of internal resistance to bring the current down! Kinda wasteful but then again with an Iout of 40mA it will last pretty long.

Do let us know if you try 10440s in a dorcy metal gear body since it is a well modded torch.

You know I saw a kipkay vid last week about the innards of a 9v battery just being 6 unwrapped AAA batteries wired in series. You would think they might have the sense to put it into a circular configuration when they first designed a 9v battery but no it had to be cuboid with two weird pins.

I had the weirdest idea after browsing dx last week.

You're right, Gazoo. AAAA quadruple A batteries, like those they use in shavers. Even less mAH then.

I'm working on one that we can make from scratch. Using an OpAmp doesn't look like a useful solution to me, and so I'm thinking of using the LM2621.

Hope it comes around soon enough... the LM2991 driver is ready and test and I like it. Works VERY nicely at very low volts too ;)

Is there a list of signed up buyers anywhere on the thread?  I can only see the prospective buyer list on page1.

I just want to see that my name is there :-[

Oh... Ok... so I guess people want to see the list then? ::)

I really never thought it would matter... I guess I'll put it in the beginning of the thread later on today... as for you Rog, you're in there for 2 of them with Int'l shipping. :D
