And it only povides good support in one position, which would have to be carefully calculated for parallel focus. And if then someone has a diode that is not inserted fully or a slightly different module, it can lead to problems.

Most modules just use a spring. The best lens nut fit so far i saw in a Meredith module. There the threads are much bigger, and the spring is really strong. But it feels just perfect, it has the right amount of resistance and is still smooth enough, and the stiffness is important for short FL lenses.

But i fear a fit as good as that is impossible with an M9x0.5 lens nut..

Wobbling can be avoided by realizing a groove in the outer threaded liner and using a teflon gasket.
As an example, I have just slightly modified one of the very well made rkcstr drawings; such a soft teflon gasket (it can have square/round section and can be also splitted, as there is the need that the gasket "reacts" with the bottom of the groove) is often used in the aeronautical field. The nut threads go in interference with the gasket, which takes the thread shape thanks to its softness. Also if it wears out after months of use, as teflon is higly friction resistant, it can be easily replaced. The size of the teflon gasket (and of the relevant groove, of course, are specifically designed to avoid wobbling and to give the right friction and pasty feeling to prevent any unintentional focus change.

If reworking of the threaded liner is not acceptable, another solution is to put an external spring, working between the threaded liner (fixed in the body) and the lens nut head. I think it could work due to the fact that the FD of the lens #2 is short, so there is no need to have big displacements of the lens nut to cover the total focusing range. The length of the lens nut can be calculated in order to give the proper space to the spring (between the head and the body) in order not to have it compressed in a pack while the nut is completely threaded in.

this thread is full of win! very clever ideas! seems like -after custom-built housings and drivers in this forum- we now get custom-built lenses and nuts/collimators too! this will be *the* perfect laser!

I remember not long ago (about 1 year ago) when nobody was using heatsinks or anything in thier hosts at all. *It was assemble your own host with a plastic or rubber spacer to take up that extra space and leave the aixiz to dissapate whatever heat it could and called it sufficient. Then I decided along with a few other people, that it just wasn't sufficient. *Wasting a lot of energy and potential power in heat that was trapped in the aixiz module. *Hence the birth of the Tallaxo heatsinks and the Kryton Smooth. *Now it's the time of many custom hosts and heatsinks, so it's an amazing realm for the DIY laser enthusiast. It doesn't suprise me though as all the custom flashlight hosts that were being made had to be seen as a guiding light (pun intended) for us laser enthusuists.

*Ahhh to remember where we came from and truly appreciate what we have now!!!

I agree... I found this place just about a year ago now and I have seen so many advances and changes in the hobby. *Its tough for me to compare to other forums since this is the only one I regularly visit, but I have a feeling that our discoveries and developments here are advancing our hobby more than anywhere else. *It always seems like what we found last month was years ago because of how far we have moved past it. *

Heh, I remember when I first came here, the PS3 diodes were the "new big thing" and the 16x red diode build was the "project of choice". *Now we have found and *mostly* lost interest in the open can diodes in favor of the blu-ray diodes with the 803T diode and now we are further moving toward the higher powered blu-ray diodes ("4x" or "6x&quot. *

We've gone from having a "build your own" driver, to having pre-built items like DrLava's Flexdrive, or my driver, which started from me designing something for my own needs and expanded from others interest in it, which I've now gone on to sell well over a thousand of them (yes, somewhere around 1300 so far!)

We had the advent of custom-built heatsinks and entire hosts (pioneered by Jayrob and Kenom, among others) to make actually professional-looking lasers and with Igor's work, hopefully topping it all off with a physically small but HIGHLY significant advance in DIY lasers that should allow us to improve upon even "old" projects by improving power output, beam quality (ideally) and even the lifespan of the diode (due to less stress on the diode) with his custom optics.

Who knows what's next... but I'll be looking forward to it! *Right now, I'm just REALLY looking forward to seeing Igor's work in action *8-)

Thanks guys, for all the suggestions and help!

I will try to keep it as simple as possible. From my experience, simple is always better.

If the entire lens nut is threaded, it will be much more stable than any of the triple element lenses for two reasons:
1. It will be deeper, due to the shorter FL of the lenses
2. The spring will be compressed much further

I will model it after the all-threaded AixiZ lens nut, which will also allow me to test the behavior up font!
I will send the manufacturer a module and a lens nut, so they can make sure it fits.

I believe this would be the easiest solution. And it would work in all but the new low quality DX modules. The modules that DX has been selling for the last two or three months have more than just one issue. The diode hole has sharp edges which strip the base of many diodes. The overall quality is bad! We should all boykot DX untill they switch back to the old manufacturers, those were good.

But if we go with an all threaded lens nut for maximum stability, those who missed the warning about the DX modules will have a problem. Eventually it will happen that someone will overlook this and then say that the lens doesn't work in their laser.

So i really need to know how many of you are using the bad DX modules. I would like to make it work in all modules, but i don't think it's worth compromising stability of the lens in order for it to work in cheap low quality modules..
If it's made to work there, it will be a more complicated lens nut design, possibly more expensive, and less good for those who actually heeded the warning.

What do you guys think?

I posted a warning in a thread on DX, below their modules...

It could even bring more people in, and help us get the price down...
But most importantly, i hope it will help prevent problems to people who missed the warnings here.

If someone has recently bought a DX module, i would appreciate if they told me what they are like. Is the focusing ring still glued on the lens nut, preventing the lens deep enough for blu rays? Do the threads stop in the middle of the module?

Hear Hear! ...well said Ryan.

Igor, you have enough things to consider besides different modules...

It seems that perhaps it may be best to just get them set up for the more popular AixiZ module, and not worry about a universal application. (IMO)

I have two PayPal accounts. The first one is being mollested by PayPal, so i had to make a new one with a new email address. I also had to create a new DX account, so....

But you're not the first to ask me this..

It would be better for all of us, if the lens was made to fit only quality modules, because otherwise there will be compromises. Besides it's better to use quality modules only anyway.

We should make it work perfectly in good modules, instead of wobbly in all modules, just so it would work in cheap ones. Those cheap modules are not worth making the lens less good.

That's why i posted the warning. *It would be better if DX reverted to old modules anyway cos the latest ones are crap. I have >20 DX modules here which i can't use.. I only buy genuine AixiZ blanks these days..

I only buy genuine AixiZ blanks these days..[/quote]

One should not install a 2000 watt custom designed sound system into a 1974 Yugo with a loose head.

'Nuff said

Peace,
dave

A shipping or packaging error resulted in me receiving 30 Aixiz modules when I only ordered the standard 10 pack. Needless to say all my home made lasers will be placed in Aixiz modules. Now if I could just get a hold of some lava drives....
