im also interested in any updates. I thought I posted this a few pages ago, but I'd like to order 5 of the 405nm coated lenses :)

can't wait!! especially if the results are as great as projected

thanks,
Kendall

When IgorT gets quiet, it is usually because he is working his a** off

Indeed.. I was real busy at work...

So, here's the deal. I wanted to wait for the fourth lens. Originally, they said two weeks. Then they were hard to reach. It turned out the main engineer was on vacation. The last thing i heard was, that the samples are made, but not coated yet, as now another engineer was on vacation. They said something about september!

I don't think i want to wait any longer...

So at this point there are three lenses. Two of them suck. The first lens increased the power, but had horrible distortions around the beam, because it's a spherical lens.. This was an expensive lesson, which is one of the reasons i'm working my ass off. If that lens worked, it would all be over by now and we would have our lenses.

The first aspheric doesn't work either for some reason. No idea why, i was expecting it to work. Maybe the design wavelength is way off. Luckily, this was just a few samples...

But the third lens (second aspheric) works great! It has the normal beam we are all used to, but slightly thinner, because of a shorter FL. It is made of a higher transmittance glass than the spherical lens, but the manufacturer didn't want to coat the samples. They wanted me to test them first.. So i don't know the final power increase for this one...

At the moment i am discussing mounting options with the manufacturer. I am also trying to convince them to throw some samples into the coating machine with some other order. This way i could tell you all the powers with the good aspheric lens before the final order.. Otherwise, i will have to make another order of 20- 30 lenses by myself i guess.

But i have to do it right this time around.. I was rushing the first time, and it didn't end too well. I'm sorry it's taking longer than expected, but i could just as well have given up at that point. However, i want to bring it to a successful conclusion even more now.

I'm hoping to squeeze some good news out of the manufacturer this week.

How much money though? I mean the dx units only cost a few bucks a piece, but maybe the custom nuts wouldn't be much more. If 1 module was ordered for each lens with the amount of interest there is already, I'd expect a LOT of varying units from DX.

I got another package from DX last week. This time they had the fat lens nuts again, which don't allow the lens in deep enough.

There is a simple solution to this.. All it takes is to put a 8mm OD o-ring into the metal focusing ring before the lens nut. Then enough of the lens nut sticks out and it goes in deep enough. It also gives you more to grab when focusing..

But for some reason, i wasn't able to remove the metal rings from the plastic nut without using enough force to destroy the lens nuts.. The manufacturer got this neat idea, to glue the lens nuts into the focusing rings!

All the DX issues don't matter for the custom lens tho, as the lenses will come in lens nuts, and you'll just need your own metal focusing ring to put on top, which you can take off your plastic lens anyway.

It's frustrating to run into snags like this. We're behind ya 100% there igor. Regardless of the outcome it's going to be ok.

Kenom, A couple pages back you said "well, I just verified with my barrel that you DO indeed need to push the diode in further than just flush." How would I be able to do that without a special tool?

IgorT, I would like one lens with the multilayer coating. My dad said yes![smiley=happy.gif]

You can't. You need some kind of special tool in order to do this.

Does anybody here sell them?

you could make one easily. I use a stainless steel tube about 2 inches long big enough to fit over the pins but not the can.

But it doesn't have to go in all the way because of the FL of these lenses, right?

No actually what he said was that it did need to go deeper so that the lens could sit closer to the diode if needed. Or at least that's what I recall.

Thanks Ken! I appreciate the support!

You can probably imagine, how i felt after putting the first lens into a laser and powering it up.. For a while there, i thought it was all over!
Then, a little later, i tested the second lens, and it was even worse!

But you know what they say.. Third time's the charm.. ;)
Seems to be true in this case.. :)

I hope, that this small difference won't matter. But it might be better, just in case.

Even if you're only using plastic lenses, it is better to have the diode fully pressed in. It ensures the diode is not at an angle.
