Where does the 808nm diodes come from?

Hi everyone,

Definitely a newbie question but I have been searching quite a bit and can't find the answer so I go for a new thread, correct me if I'm wrong ;-)

The red lasers that have been popular for years in pointers have it's source in consumer electronics, that would be the dvd-burner. The purple 405nm one in the blue ray.

Is there some kind of comsumer electronics product that has made this 808nm diode cheaply avalible?

A Infra red heating unit for physiotherapy would i believe use 808 or 830 nm diode possibly higher nm but around that frequency ,going by the equipment my physiologist uses on me when i have and injury and the area needs to be warmed to help with the healing process .if someone else has other ideas please say something this is just what I'm aware of I'm my own experience. Most diodes of that frequency have a high duty cycle which also makes me feel this is a use of these diodes, and they are used in mobile phones as proximity sensors when your face is close to the screen so it turns off to save the battery that one i an sure off as a use ,as you can just see a slight red glow at night from near the top off your phone ,that goes off when your face gets to close to it or your finger which is an easier test to see in action.this is when you have your phone in about to make a call mode ie the keypad is open to dial a number, or you are in a call

Thanks for your reply Blaster! :)

I guess the proximity sensors on cellphones have tp be really low powered, kind of like a remote control so I doubt that they are the source for for example a green DPSS laser.

Medical purposes on the other hand seems likley, I didn't think of that. Doesn't like those hair removal devices also use som kind of IR laser?

They are needed for all nearly DPSS Lasers that's the main Reason IMO.
every YAG or YVO4 laser that is pumped by laser diodes need them.

Yes 808 nm lasers are used on ppl to remove hair on pale to normal colored skin ...I remember now looking that up some time ago, hence the long duty cycle ...and yes you don't want a 532nm green in your face literally on your phone as a proximity sensor rather a bit bright by about 500 times a very dim 808 830 nm laser led at very low power is obviously a far better choice
