Man, I'm out of the laser game for a year or so, and suddenly I'm reading about direct, non-DPSS green laser diodes? When did this happen, and do they suck?

Also, there's this: [URL="http://gizmodo.com/5916842/the-only-thing-cooler-than-a-laser-is-an-x+ray-laser"/URL]

I'm guessing you missed a lot. Well, labratories produced smaller x-ray lasers, pico projectors are pushing more compact, and lower wavelength green lasers (diodes). Only a few members here have them, not enough to go around quite yet. They're a new wavelength for us hobbyists, so I don't expect much negativity about them. Check out the progress thread in the green section.

As for the rest of the laser market, here's a basic overview of the past year. 3W single-diode (still multimode) 445's are being pushed by members here after the 9mm cans came out.
A "new" old laser company is selling lasers here now, Lasever. They're selling *inexpensive* 473's. (as in <$400 for >80mW). They also sell high-powered green modules and lab lasers for a great price. (2W for ~$1300)
1W DPSS greenies are becoming more common around here, wicked lasers still sells crap.
1W (multimode) red mitsu diodes are experimented with as well.
1W binned (single mode) 405's are popping up now.
671nm lasers are starting to lower in price, also sold by lasever.
Yellow lasers, behind the scenes are being pushed into more efficient methods for astronomy, prices remain the same. 589nm moreso than 593.5nm.
200mW 488nm diodes are being pushed by nichia (?) I believe
Orange lasers are popping up, recently enough dave sold an orange HeNe to cheech. Otherwise 607nm Pr:pAYAC "DPSS-like" lasers are lowering in price, these are pumped by the 445nm diodes.
