How does this pertain to lasers? Well, in the closed universe theory, if I point my DX greenie at the sky for a few moments, there is a small chance that at least one photon will reach the end of our own universe bubble in a few billion years before reverting back to the big crunch.

So there, lasers are now part of this equation. LOL

I would say that the Universe is infinite. Today nobody have a perfect proof about the boundaries of the Universe. We actually don't know the real fact that how much such Universe exists. So this is still a very big unsolved question.

Well, do you know why I think the universe is infinite? So many things are infinite like numbers.
Infinite amount of numbers between 0 and 1.
A circle having no end or beginning.
Infinite amount of colors.
Endless amounts of songs to be made.
Someones Aunt or Grandmother that can seemingly talk forever. Heheh...
An infinite amount points between each other in a line.
Endless amounts of possible words from the Alphabet.

I feel the amount of space in the universe is endless... otherwise it would have to take something to make a boarder.

I believe that the universe is finite. That's because I believe in big bang theory and it is obvious that with a finite speed of propagation and a finite time , universe could not stretch to infinity

i could be wrong. but 0-1 doesnt have an infinite amount of numbers beteween them. if it was infinite then we wouldn't get to 1. just like when we count we cant count to infinity.

There are - think about fractals (infinite detail in a mathematically described pattern), or the pattern 0.9,0.99,0.999,0.9999 and so on - that pattern doesn't have an end (no limit on its length) and therefore, neither does the number of numbers between 0 and 1.

i'm horrible at math. true story but. my problem is the wording.. yes there are infinite fractal possibilites but if you pick one i.e. 16th's, or millionths of, or what ever. it will always go to 1 if you are using said unit.

Default Re: Is the universe infinite or finite?

I believe it is 'infinite' due to my understanding of the 'laws' of physics, gas expands, and gas is relative to temperature and pressure. Pressure isn't so much constant, but it atleast allows space to expand (if you call it a gas, we'll get to that later) however, temp is not constant. But I beleve space can be one of two things, (the 'empty' space) a 3rd state of matter, or 5th (again, LATER) since the supposed 'dark matter' hasn't been put in a container, I believe that is because it CAN'T be, it can't be solid, or liquid, which leaves 3 more choices. Gas (possible), plasma, which would burn everything aswell as cause space to be a vibrant rainbow of color, or, a 5th state (the name by the way is 'Bose-Einstein' for those who want to google it). However, the only issue with the 5th state possibility, is that for it to fall in a 5th state situation, the material needs to be cooled to a certain temperature, AND all the material would act as ONE atom. For instance, if you tried to put some of it into a ceramic jar for example, if would fall through like nothing was there to stop it. If there's a hole even only ONE-ATOM wide, all the material can flow through at one time. And the only MAIN issue is the temperature, it needs to be at a certain LOW temp so that all the material will act on ONE wave function, and all act as ONE atom. This is a huge issue when we're talking about ALL the empty space in the universe being ONE temp, but that can be solved with one question: "What if it's not all empty space?" What if there actually is something between the stars, and planets, and asteroids OTHER than dark matter? An invisible material, an invisible solid material or stars that have decayed PAST black holes, to a point where they just...dissapeared entirely? Where say a black hole ate ITSELF, then what happens? Does it just infinitely eat, or does it just go away? Also with this material, you wouldn't notice it at all, it would go through the craft, AND us, we would have no idea, and since it's colorless we'd probably have nothing to tip it off as even being there. But, since it's colorless, that begs the question, why do we see black? Do our eyes just keep searching for what's inbetween and just substitute nothing with black? IS there some big black 'wall' at the end? Whenever I have this talk with somebody, I can't help but think about all the questions, yeah sure, everybody has an 'answer' hell I got answers up the ass, but do any of them mean anything? Finite, infite? Just 14 characters on a screen 5 different characters on a keyboard. THEY mean nothing, words mean nothing. The only thing that means anything in a 'theory' is practice. The only thing a 'theory' is, is a hypothesis without any proof. I can theorize that I'm having steak for dinner, but does that mean it's true? Theories are meaningless, hypothosies are what really mean anything. You get a good hypothesis about the universe, then I'll be all ears, but until then I'm just going to agree with these 3 words. "Space is BIG!"

You can't PHYSICALY count to infinity, but there are number inbetween.

yes i know you cant count to infinity,(although i read some where that chuck norris did it twice) but you can count infinitely! also as to your statement that words are meaningless and mean nothing.... words are everything to us. with out words would could not imagine, and we could not communicate.

Words are meaningless in a sense when trying to explain something beyond reason. Like explaining the very bottom of a Trench, or the surface of Neptune, it can't be done, it's meaningless because you can't explain a phycological understanding of something when it might be a 50/50 clash to somebody else's understanding. Trying to explain something completely unorthodox is beyond any reason given by man. It's almost impossible to explain what I BELIEVE if in fact you are not even sure about what YOU believe yourself. It's like trying to teach step 3 when people barely even know the project, let alone step 1.

What is within reason to you may not be in reason to me and vice versa... lets talk about the "trench" lets say ive been in it and you havent. what about astronauts that see earth from space, but i cant see 5 miles down the freeway because of all the smog. You see, it is all about an individuals own ability to understand and rationalize. as for the infinite numbers between 0 and 1, i will always see it as finite. but mathmaticians clearly see it infinite. the green highlighted green part is something that doesn't make sense. Every thing is "new and unorthodox" to every body at some point. so by your logic no body can learn anything ever? so because a person isn't able to see beyond, isn't fair to say words are meaningless. because to me they mean everything.
