Question on diode construction

Hi,

Im doing a presentation in school on lasers, and i have found a lot of information on the forums helpful. However, one question i could not find from searching the forum or from Sams laser guide is what makes laser diodes have a different wavelength. Is it the physical construction of the diode? Or does it have to do with the materials its made from?

Any information would be much appreciated! :)

This might help also. :yh:

From the linked wiki:

405nm and 445nm are InGaN Indium Gallium Nitride
532nm currently widely available is DPSS pump diode 808nm is GaAlAs Gallium Aluminum Arsenide
635nm and 657nm and 670nm AlGaInP Aluminum Gallium Indium Phosphide

Each of these semiconductors have different junction forward voltages and even different conversion efficiencies between batches.
