So I was watching some videos on the NASA app on my sons ipad. Anyways the video I watched was about 1.5 hours longer than this one. Needless to say it has got to be one of the coolest things I have seen in the future of space flight in a long time. This guy is definitely on to something very very big. Just check it out if you have the time.. Hope y'all enjoy it as much as I did. If nothing, try and understand how amazing even the thought and concept is of such of thing. 50 years ago if someone were to propose such a device or even a drawing of this, he or she would be laughed at and ridiculed for many years. I just love how far we have come in such a short amount of time and how far we will go 50 years from now..

The video isn't working because you have extra characters between the YT tags, the only part that should be there is the: LAdj6vpYppA

"This laser is so powerful, it could accidently cripple a satellite orbiting above."

Just freakin WOW! That's amazing!

<sarcasm>
Naaahh...no way...they'll never weaponize that! They wouldn't dare!

That could work both ways. What if the laser was orbiting in a satellite?

Sorry to go off topic but I couldn't resist.

The idea of laser powered spacecraft looks like a good one, it looks like a cheaper way to launch things into space, exactly what we need, but huge orbiting satellites that use lasers or masers to beam energy to the launching spacecraft would also have military use. We may be able to fry whole cities from space in the near future.:eek:

I can tell you with facts that there are some pretty crazy weapons out there! I've seen L.A.W.S. in action with my own eyes! I had a very brief stay on the USS Ponce a while back.

It may already be obsolete. I remember I once heard a guy call into a radio show claiming he was in the army and had witnessed tests of a directed energy weapon that could fire over the horizon through the earth over great distance. He said they hoped to develope a weapon that would reduce the need to drop bombs or fire missiles and instead they could just plug in GPS coordinates and destroy a target from far away. Someone claiming to be in the Navy made a similar claim saying they had already developed a laser like weapon that could fire through water and destroy targets over the horizon. It sounds very hard to belive but at the same time it sounds like something they would be researching. If there's any truth to it I would say we are all doomed. In any case weapons systems will continue to improve, everyone wants to be well armed because the danger never ends, but the arms race itself is a danger because it gets easier and easier to kill larger numbers of people.

This is something that was designed to combat drones and other aircraft and all that follow. I agree with ya Alan but I also believe in the need for such things. If we don't have it, others will

I agree, if we don't have the most advanced weapons then someone else could become the dominant force in the world. Am not sure if any one country should be the dominant force in the world, but I do remember the Cold War years very well, and MAD (mutual assured destruction) kept our insane leaders from blowing us to bits, let's hope it continues to work as more countries acquire nukes and ICBMs and other advanced weapons.

Other than lasers and possibly other directed energy weapons, another weapons system we will soon see is the rail gun and possibly coil guns. These are cheap to fire and don't use regular ammo, no propellant, just the projectile, you just need electricity, lots of it for a moment. The perfect weapon for Navy ships with nuclear reactors.

One thing scary about these is that the technology is incredibly simple, any country can develop these as a weapon. You could even build a small low powered one at home. I expect in the near future there will be smaller mobile ones mounted on vehicles.

There are other energies such as microwave that can be used. Say there is a riot or demonstration. An unmarked van can pull up near the crowd, "bake" the people. Then drive away. Not a shot fired but then people start getting sick and dying and there is nobody to blame or fight with because they have already left before the first signs of being exposed appear :/

The national guard has something like this mounted on a Humvee I forget the name of it but it emits a crazy loud noise and massive amounts of microwaves to stun people in a riot type setting..

There's no need for anything but regular police for riot or crowd control! The national guard has no business having such weapons, these are battlefield weapons, if these are ever used against people here in the US durring a riot or demonstration the people operating these weapons are criminals and traitors! If there's even a need for riots it means our leaders have failed us and need to be replaced!

The way it was explained was its a device for crowd control in the event of a riot which I agree with and support 1000000% I've seen the blood shed of such so called events. I don't agree or support this if its used in a peaceful protest but when people start looting and setting building on fire and attacking innocent bystanders that's when things like this should be used. There was a recent study done in Bmore, it said that 75% of the people involved in the riots did not live in the area or even the state. Out of that 75% 55% of people that were arrested were convicted and repeat felons and said they were only there to cause chaos. So that means more than half of the rioters dint even care why they were there in the first place. Now I do not support the actions of bad police, there are bad eggs in all lines of work, it would be impossible to hire only good cops etc.. The need for weapons and non lethal weapons are a must in the world we live in today. I would never call an American soldier a traitor for using such things if it were absolutely necessary for its use in action. Our leaders can only do so much, but as a nation it is up to its people to fill in the gaps. lol don't even get me started on the so called "leaders" we have today because most of them are farrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr from such a title..

I didn't watch the video with sound but isn't the laser just ionizing the air into an expanding plasma which propels the craft?
