the LHC is a particle accelerator and it works with THAT: Particles. particles dont have the mass of the whole earth, they can form one but they wont if they're isolated or in little groups
(yeah i know this sounds retarded, but that's what i use to justify it to everyone)
well, kinda, cept by "neutralize" they annihilate, meaning they convert from matter to energy with 100% efficiency.
this is a case where you can actually use E=MC^2 :P

E=(0.001 kg)(310^8 m/s)^2

E=90000000000000 J or 90000000 GJ

1 ton TNT = 4.184 GJ

so thats 21510516.25 tons of TNT

in other words, one gram of antimatter + one gram of matter = big boom
but they have produced antimatter in other particle accelerators before, but its an infinitesimally small fraction of a gram.

i cant wait for an actual collision

A gram of antimatter is a hell of a lot, I'm not sure that the total ever produced would even be close to this.

... 3.55pm Sep 12 and we're all still here.

For all you know, space and time will rip open and some old dude with this huge beard will poke in and shout something increasingly incomprehensible about Babylon and Babel, then stop, have a look at the LHC, and say "Whoa. That one'll look great in my grandson's sandbox. I'll just grab it, pick a few souvenirs, then let you guys get back to your business. Oh, and the Pope so needs to go, and the Middle East folks should start playing nice. Take care. Ta-ta."

One is as likely as the other in the absence of something concrete to base any speculation on.

amazing how it actually gains mass as it speeds up just as e=mc^2 predicts! I cant wait till they start colliding particles! I wonder what we will find! :-?

I read this project that was working with matter and anti-matter.
They said when matter and anti-matter collide then the resulting matter
would go into another dimension. That is why it seems to be destroyed, but is never destroyed. Just transfered.

Something else. I remember hearing this a long long time ago that china had created very small particles of anti-matter and they were so heavy they went all the way through the earth and came out the other side. Not sure of the source for this one either. I'd have to look it up again.

Things that make you go HMMMMM.

Haha. yeah I would have to agree. I don't claim to know much and tend to listen to conspiracy theories from time to time I did do a bit of reading on this subject. Very Intriguing stuff.

The creation of anti-matter costs $62.5 trillion per gram, and it is 10,000,000,000 times as powerful as a conventional chemical combustion. It would only take a gram to put a shuttle into orbit.
A solar flare in July 2002 created about a pound of antimatter, or half a kilo, according to new NASA-led research. The problem is harnessing the anti-matter.

They say they can create the anti-matter with petawatt class lasers too.

Well guys, If you've read the news you'll see that the LHC is out of commission for at least 2 months.

Quote:
It is believed that the damage was caused when super-cooled helium escaped because of a faulty electrical connection between two magnets in the massive machine.

The sector that was damaged will have to be slowly warmed up to well above absolute zero over a number of weeks so that repairs can be made.

Giles said: "It's too early to say precisely what happened, but it seems to be a faulty electrical connection between two magnets that stopped superconducting, melted and led to a mechanical failure and let the helium out.

I have no idea whats going to happen when they bring it up to full power but thats why they made it in the first place. If I had to choose I would just fire it.

So what do you guys think would happen when you go "into" a black hole? Would you get stretched to death or would you just fall strait through the singularity? What would it look like to people when they see you "fall" into the black hole?
