Hi Folks,

Here's a link to BBC News that describes an invisibility "carpet" capable of hiding a bump from light in 3 dimensions. They use lasers to manufacture the optical matrix responsible for the effect, so it's a pretty interesting read.

It also raises the question: If such a "cloak" is tuned for random light in the wavelengths the eye perceives, would it also affect coherent light? Might one be able to penetrate it and illuminate the hidden item using an IR laser?

Research like this is always interesting even if any applications may be a far ways off.

I'll be afraid if invisibility cloaks are actually created.
If those fall into the wrong hands.. *whistles* I'd hate to be a gas station clerk. *kapow*

in the wrong hands...hmmm. the name we shall not speak. LoL they already have made invisibility cloaks using meta material. although it isn't perfect but it does "seem" to bend the light. from what i have read.

a great cheap (all in relativity) way to create a basic "invisibility cloak" is to setup a system with two screens (possibly projection or better yet, OLED) and two cameras, with each screen constantly projecting the camera on the other side... k well basically I saw a T-Shirt for sale somewhere that had this kind of a thing setup and it looked pretty cool. It doesn't make you invisible but it does look like you have a nice gaping hole through your body :wtf:

now trying to find it again...

peace & thanks

your idea only works for front and back. what about top and sides? the meta material idea is "3d"

But it sounds like it only looks like a mirror, and you cant see through it.

"It's like a carpet mirror," he continued. "If you hide an object under it, there is a bump, so you see a distortion in the reflected image.

"We put the carpet cloak on top of that bump and it bends the light so that the distortions disappear.

"You have the impression that the mirror you're looking at is flat."

Invisibility seems like a real pain in the ass to make. I hope I will be able to see it.

was it actually called an invisibility cloak? In Harry Potter I believe that's what it was actually called :p

peace & thanks

I had to look it up cause I forgot.

They called it the thermal-optical camouflage

It doesn't bend light it displays an image of the surrounding environment or something like that. That would be cool though.

EDIT: I guess that's not similar at all. Except that they both can be made as a cloak for the user.
