So yeah, this machine is like a wet dream for the laser enthusiast.
"This July, California-based NIF made history by combining 192 laser beams into a record-breaking laser shot that packed over 500 trillion watts of peak power—a thousand times more power than the entire United States uses at any given instant."

I'd hate to be the poor sap doing optics alignment on that

This is cool. Imagine 200 years later, this gets packed into a handheld 0.o :p

Etch the moon?

Doesn't Texas Insterments DLP tv's use lasers and "All the wonderful millions of mirrors". If this can be put in a flat screen years ago, just imagine what we will have years from now...

My favorite is the third photo - looks like they are about to have a game of conkers.

Beamshots? Balloon popping?

 I would have to assume that something as powerful and expensive as that would have a use other than popping balloons or lighting matches!

Yeah, but what really sets this laser apart is that they don't need to be black balloons or Sharpied matches.

Meh, I think my 9mm is probably more powerful... sheesh they need 192 of their little lasers to burn stuff, I only need one.

I hope the people that are working on this laser read the threads on LPF about wearing eye protection.

HAHA,:worthy: that laser probably instantly lights all the matches and pops every balloon within a 100 mile radius as soon as it is turned on.

Yes, but according to all theoretical analysis, the NIF will not achieve fusion (too much thermal turbulence). What is more cool is this (my baby).
