Tinfoil hats are widely known to help with that. But since they are funny looking & crunchy if hidden under a hat I have made my own supreme (& highly fashionable) fedora hat with conductive thread throughout. I have found that a spider web pattern works better then 10 layers of tin foil, copper foil or even gold foil !!!!!!!!!111111one

And I'm even willing to sell a few!!!

I've done my best at photoshopping the effect (the color isn't as bright, but you get the idea) on the images below:

Anyone have any idea what's going on here? Why would my eyes interpret the coloring of the alarm clock with this band of violet?

Thanks

I came across this thread and saw those images and just had to post. I get this too with a red LED display alarm clock after lights out. I tend to spend the early post-midnight hours looking at the screen before calling it a night. I wouldn't call it violet because it's hard to tell dim colours apart when it's dark- just visible waves and the curves alternate between peaks & troughs like in your pictures when I change where I look at the display. I suppose I should mention I get migraines with auras (every 2 years or so average) since buffy asked but I suspect it's just how eyes normally react. I have some experience with hypochondria so I don't bother worrying about it.

Rhodopsin cycle. You saturated the chemicals the eye uses to detect light, and since they are taking a while to regenerate, you get a afterimage. Your iris is wide open, the led light is enough to flood the rod cells in the eye.

And see Phosphene - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I just cant remember what WTF the process,in the dark, is named...

That is a problem of turning 40, the memory just starts to go.

I also see purble blurs, but then when I look at an unfocused (around 1m diameter) 200mw red laser pointer in a completely dark room. I haven't tested it with other 'red' glows in the dark. It's a weird effect and actually annoys me because it 'tickles' my eyes.

Well its funny. Its not at all scary there is no need of any kind of fear of anything strange. This all because of the different dimension reflection of LED studded in you clock.

Do you take any form of medications?

That can be a side effect to some people if they take meds.

it is the way that the wavelength of purple reacts with our eyes. that is why when you look at purple/blue LEDs or lights you will see a small halo, or the beam dot of a blue-violet laser is wider, it is just a trick of your eyes not being evolved enough. simple science.
