Okay, so it's a pulsed near IR. How is this better than Nd:YAG? Where are the efficiency numbers? "flash of light" suggests flash lamp, which is vastly inferior to diode pumping. They really don't write these articles for the technically minded people, do they?

Fewer cheesy diamond puns, more data please!

LOL, I was right... I saw you posted on this and thought, hummm... 9 to 1 odds he's going to poo poo it in some way or another, opened it and wha la!

Thank you for your insightful contribution to this topic. :yh:

It's "voila", by the way.

Ha, you did it again! My ex-wife was like that, smart as a whip, knew everything.... but had this propensity to slice and dice everything and everyone, just couldn't stop doing it. Well, I'm pointing it out twice in this thread now and you are quite right, I added nothing. I thought the article was cool though :)

Well lets see...Nd:YAG won't do the 12xx nm that this diamond laser does, for starters. And also....IT'S A FREAKIN' DIAMOND!

As for your other questions...I'm gonna use everyone's favorite catch phrase...UTFSE (use the f'n search engine!) No one here is gonna spoon feed you!

You added NOTHING to this thread but a bunch of poo-pooin'. So I poo-poo your poo-poo.

Heheh,

Ok, so a flash/arc lamp lump laser...so what? They didn't post any power figures or efficiency, so whats to say it's better than anything we have now? Oh big deal its ~100nm deeper IR than the potential hundreds of watts we have now....so what? I'm going with cyp and poo-pooing this until they release some actual quantitative data.

use the f'n search engine!

You start a thread about a vague technology, and this is your response when someone asks a question about it? "google it" has it's place, but using it all the time, or in cases where this probably hasn't been discussed before just makes you look like a douche goblin

You added NOTHING to this thread but a bunch of poo-pooin'.

I'm sorry, did my asking questions about the article piss you off?

Were you instead expecting a circle jerk of "I have no interest of how this works, but wow diamond!!" ?

Mmmm...I see. You mouth off on a subject you know nothing about, rather than look something up on it and bringing something worth saying to the table.

Then you resort to name-calling? Very nice...expected, even.

Piss me off? Not even close...you don't have the power to achieve that.
I just posted an article that I thought was interesting, and your first response was confrontational. Why is that? Do you have a problem with that in other areas of your life, or just here on the forums?

Freakin' lighten up.

I've been active in the forum long enough to understand Cyparagon is stuck in poo poo mode most of the time, but yet he is also willing to help members from time to time too. It's a yin yang thing, I guess you just have to understand his mindset or get miffed, I used to get miffed and upset at him, now I see what is happening.

I think it's more a scientifically-minded thing....question claims that are made with little self support. Case in point, that article gives no quantitative data, it basically says "wow powerfel diemond lasor."

That's what science is. New ideas need to be verified and discussed. You're just whining about how I brought it up. Are you going to continue complaining about my delivery method, or are you going to address the topic you started?

The problem is not with cyparagon, It's with the article. This is a press release for non- scientists. Diamond is indeed "the coming thing" I have been working with some CVD diamond for a while. It is becoming affordable It is an ideal Raman shifter. Its thermal tolerance is at least an ORDER OF MAGNITUDE greater than the next best material and its optical transmission range is very wide. I am not aware of it operating as a host for an active atom such as neodymium. That would be a breakthrough.

I like what is being done with fiber lasers and bragg gratings, the gain medium is in the fiber, I bet the beam quality/profile is very good.

I know I posted these videos elsewhere, but I love the materials science.

Yes flash lamps and neodymium doped glass plates are used at the National Ignition Facility and make huge power, but it takes a large building, these fiber lasers could be scaled down, and again I bet beam quality will be good because of the small diameter of the round fiber.

There is no sound in this 1st video.

So now we need to understand bragggratings, this is interesting.

I really would like to know how the PUMP COUPLERS work in the top video, I would like to couple half a dozen 405's, maybe more.
Wouldn't the wave fronts have to be matched?

I'd love to see this technology mature, Cyparagon is almost always right in his points, delivery not so much, but he has good points.

Man made diamonds are superior to natural, I love the advances in material science, carbon fiber nano tubes, aerogel.

Did you know the titanium connecting rods in the corvette engine are pressed powder, a lot of auto makers are using pressed powder metal and it works.

I don't remember what kind of crystal this is but it was 20 bucks on ebay and it's has fire as good as any diamond I've ever seen, I shot a laser into it and got a bunch of beams out, but it had to be set just right.

There's no fake silver or anything, it's just multi faceted crystal, I don't know if it was pressed or cut but it's brilliant.
