Apple’s new patent dreams of laser beams on iPhones

The neat thing, if that make it work that way, is that instead of having to physicaly go to one point of the measurement and aim the laser at the other to measure distance(like you would have to do with existing laser distance meters) you should be able to just aim it at both points to calculate the distance... I think:D

Cool stuff.

Another smartphone peripheral? Smartphones need better battery, not more peripherals I'll never use!

How can they patent the first claim?
"1. An electronic device, comprising: a laser sensor having a light-emitting component and a light sensor; and device position detection circuitry that monitors a device position and a device orientation while the laser sensor is in operation. "

That is the main thing what lidar systems installed in airplanes or ships do: shoot, measure, check real pointing angles, draw fancy plots.

Lawyers should jump on Apple.

Yes better battery, not one more thing to run down the battery faster!

I agree, it looks like existing technology they took and figured out how to miniaturize it. I am sure there will be some lawyers involved here.

Yep. Completely agree with that. Give me a week without a charge and take away some of the superfluous features. You could always make case features that communicate via NFC. So you have your awesome smart phone with a ton of battery life and then you think....hmm, I would like to have a laser measurement device on my phone. Just go buy a tool case, and it will have hardware to support its features and communicate with with the phone via NFC. On the phone you just download the app for that utility case and boom. Golden.
