so i read all the threads on safety, and the stories of how peoples eyes have gotten damaged, and bought some safety goggles from zonestealth a couple of days ago-- they were the only ones on ebay haha - and then i stumbled upon somewhere in this forum with a warning to stay away from zonestealth. is this only for his lasers? i saw that page with the "bridge" guy and the goggles that look similar to the ones i ordered, but they were for a range of wavelengths and i gather thats the problem? i ordered this one: cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=220145199795&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=012

which is supposedly only for red (preparing myself for senkats diode's!)

hmm.. when i get it ill shine a laser through it, take a pic, and post it up. how small or weak does the laser have to be after passing through the goggles to be safe? or is there some other way to test it without wearing them and shining the laser in my eye?

thanks guys

dot dimness doesnt matter, I had a pair of green "laser protection" goggles that senkat tested and were crap. only good as normal safty goggles.

I've been told to only order NOIR goggles (which WL sells too, btw) because msot others are junk, though I'm sure this is not ALWAYS the case. I think I've seen those goggles before and tehy were crap, but I might be thinking of another set.

Yeah - those goggles have been discusssed many, many times before :( They are advertised as broad spectrum blockers, with a very high VLT (visible light transmission) and they are of dubious quality. your BEST bet would be to cover two-way shipping, and contact Pseudo to see if he can test them out - I dunno if Aseras has the time - but I DO know he has the proper equipment as well ! (He has EVERYTHING ! I really do not think I like him anymore....he has way more toys than I do !)

I thought the "testing" was measuring a laser of the blocked wavelength, and then measure it after it went through the goggles...?

That is one way to do it, but another would be to set it up prior to a spectrometer to see what levels of light are blocked, etc....a VERY important part of it is measuring the VLT - as if the VLT is too low, you damage your eyes when they dialate :(

I see... I guess there also needs to be a tollerance range. I've seen 550nm and 560nm both for red, and if for some odd reason the goggles only block as low a 550, thent he 560 is being fed directly into your eye, right? (probably not that tight of a band difference, but same point)

hey thanks for the replies guys

the one's that i bought weren't advertised as broad spectrum, just for 650 nm, but are they still the same broad spectrum ones that were discussed before?

just one more quick question - if they turn out to be the crap broad spectrum ones, would i be better off not using the goggles until i can get some of those wickedshades? or should i use them for the time bieng

AWW Senkat don't be hatin :) I have lots of toys and no time to play. I can't even find time right now to get some good pictures up. I'm just sitcking my head in here and there as I find time while I'm wainting for things to finish...

while this scrolls by on a HD I NEED

Yeah I do computers too, I tend to do more computer work than other stuff these days. I'm good at getting data off of bad disks.I've even gotten daring and swtiched heads and motors before. Nothing to loose really, and it was worth it because I got the data I wanted...

Then I take them to the gun rnage and work my frustration out on them.

FWIW Aluminum platters makes really good mirrors.

haha ok i got the goggles today (yes this is a thread about goggles)

well, ill post up the photos i took.

about the VLT - when i put on the goggles, and look in a dark corner of my room, before my eyes adjust after a few seconds i notice it is dimmer, so that means it isnt transmitting all the visible light. So i took a picture with the camera on constant settings outside with and without the goggles (both at 1/800 and F/4), and the goggles produce a noticeably dimmer picture. hmm it doesnt seem like much difference in brightness when i wear them, but there is obviously a lot of difference - our eyes must adjust very quickly. on a slightly better note, you cant see anything red - i dont have any lasers that work at the moment, but when i shined a red LED and a torch next to each other, the torch light stayed the same but the red light disappeared. The other photo's of the red LED arn't taken at constant settings, so no real comparisons can be made.

it would be great if anyone could do the same VLT comparison - with the camera on constant settings - with the wickedlaser lasershades as well - educational purposes haha.

thanks guys
