Oh that wasn't as bad as kipkays laser lighter. Atleast the guy in this video lit it from the side, instead of pointing it directly at the eyes, haha.

Not a PHR straight to the eyes.. I'd take my chances. That KTP would be so bright though, I don't even know how the guy kept his eyes open, lol.

I'd go for PHR... even if it did blind me, at least I don't have a hole through my head!

What he just did ISN'T that dangerous at all. A cigarrete isn't reflective in any way. 125mW randomly moving on the up part of your face IS dangerous.

try 45W q-switched. Specular/diffused reflections can cause retinal burns from several METRES. Peak powers reaching many thousands of watts.

Pulsed lasers are most definitely MUCH worse for the eyes, especially in scanning applications. In theory, even an indirect, matte reflection of over 500mW could be considered unsafe to eyes, which is the reason that class IV is controlled more tightly than 3B. In practice, he'd probably be OK, the worst damage would most probably be temporary "flash-blindness", but I'd personally still not choose to do it without goggles.

With all due respect, you are wrong. The reason that lasers are rated at class four because the specular reflections can cause eye damage. The Cigarette produces specular reflections. A laser such as that produces very high power pulses, these pulses are what do the damage. You should never work around that laser, or any Class 4 laser without safety glasses suitable for the power.

Please keep your mouth shut on safety issues if you do not know what you are talking about.

Heh, thanks for explaining it in more detail than I did ... just as well you can't get a laserscope to fit in a pointer, eh? ;)

@laser_ben: I never said it wasn't dangerous. I said it wasn't as dangerous as what kipkay did. Maybe the sentence "cigarettes aren't reflective in any way" wasn't the best one. What I meant is that a cigarette will never reflect 125mW inside your eye, while obviously what kipkay did COULD ;)
