Ocean City - Green laser pointers at airplane - YouTube

Check out that video. A private pilot and some friends are out cruising the skies over the beach at night, and of course some nitwits on the ground feel compelled to point their lasers at the plane.

Are those "laser attacks" ? I wouldn't say so, the perps are probably drunk in any case. Just a bunch of fools being foolish, it seems to me. And of course, risking serious jail time in the process.

Note how the cockpit does not seem to be flooded with light, as the dishonest government videos would have us believe. The beams are certainly visible but not terribly bright, and when the light crosses the camera lens (or eye) one does in fact see a bright but very brief flash. There are some fireworks going off as well, which are fairly bright, more so than the lasers.

Lastly, if I'm not mistaken, it looks like there are some people shining flashlights at the plane. The flashlights look MUCH brighter than the lasers, a brilliant, glaring white light. If I were a pilot, I'd be much more bothered by that. But of course, any lawmaker trying to ban flashlights would be laughed straight out of office.

The pilot and passengers certainly remark on the laser operators using some choice words, but none of them seem to be having any kind of retinal crisis or impairment of vision. Hell, the folks in that plane seem almost amused, if anything, and the annoyance they express is on the same level as rolling their eyes at a stupid person, same as when you watch an episode of Jackass.

That is why I say that "laser attacks" and sensationalist reports of eye damage are largely fabrications on the part of the power-hungry government and whiny airline pilots. Also, the media, who distort and blow everything out of proportion for the sake of ratings. The videos you see of the whole flight deck being flooded with green light are patently fabricated; to achieve that level of illumination one would need to use something like a 1-watt green laser, which the vast majority of nitwits do not, and will not ever own.

Again, look at those flashlights being shone up at the plane. They are FAR brighter, and a flashlight's divergent beam (compared to the lasers) means that it is not just a flash, it is a steadily glaring light source. In fact, it makes me wonder how many "laser attacks" are in fact due to misuse of flashlights, rather than actual lasers.

I'm all for laser safety, and even levying fines against nitwits for pointing at planes, but I completely despise the government's utter contempt for us and their willingness to lie straight to our faces when it comes to this stuff.

Having actually been lased before it really does disorient you and cause partial night blindness and sore eyes. Depending on the laser output and altitude involded, divergence; etc. It can cause damage.

That video is way more realistic than the govt videos. I think it would really disorient you if the laser was shined at the plane while it was landing or taking off.

try this! get in your car drive down the road and have friends lase the shit out of your car (not straight in front of you) and see if you can still drive. I say not in front because no one will be in the sky with the laser at altitude. Also make sure the car is a mile or so away from the laser so to be similar to flying. I bet you do just fine. Remember a plane can move a bit without "going off the road" or crashing into trees or other object so easily so I feel the room for error is a little better than a automobile if you "took your eyes off the road (sky)" for a couple of seconds. Whatever the sissy government and soccer moms rule the day now
