The ultimate laser safety goggles: LCD Video goggles, with cameras! Doesn't change the color of the environment, doesn't reduce beam visibility (too much at least) and is 100% safe as long as the power is not too high, and the goggles cover your eyes completely.

What do you think, is this already available, and is this Chimp-approved?

I was having a conversation with someone about this a few months ago.. it would work really well as far as I can tell, though if you hit the camera directly with a higher powered laser you could cause burns to the CCD.. I recommended using a cheap webcam or an old VHS camcorder as the video feed.

Another bonus for this would be that cheap webcams can see IR, making it a breeze to burn things with high powered invisible lasers.

As long as your eyes are not exposed to the laser light your eyes are protected. This kind of thing is already in common usage today. The nods used by the military provide an artificial lens on the world via IR. Never thought you'd see an infrared beam, look through a AN-PVS-xx device. It's not designed per se for blocking coherent light but it would do it just fine. It also provides a ready made system for adapting to whatever wavelengths you want in a durable, battery powered package.

The only drawback would be damaging the CCD on a direct shot with a higher power laser.

Well, remember good LCD video goggles would be pretty pricey. The ones on DX are, what, $170? And they have a tiny resolution and with direct video feed would probably be pretty laggy as well.

If you got ones that you could easily replace the camera on and the replacements were cheap you could use that :p
