me being the irresponsible one, i don't have any safety glasses, and haven't had an accident "YET", i do know i get VERY nervous when people touch my lasers, because even when i explain the dangers, they don't take it seriously.

i've even had people still try to shine it at me when after i tell them the dangers....needless to say those people got the laser taken away and are no longer allowed to touch them.

I could see my friends doing exactly what you are talking about Mohrenberg, which is why they aren't going to be touching my lasers.

I'm with Mohrenberg, no safety, I think it's time to invest after seeing this. I have a blu-ray coming that is 250mw, that is not safe. My green is 100mw and peaks at 110mw. That's pretty scary. Never know, I could have a spot. None noted yet, no accidents. Just a bright ass green dot if indoors, that is not safe, I think I learned how important they really are seeing how quickly your eye got damaged.

Unless you are on a beer budget with champagne lasers I would advise getting laser safety glasses. I can see that there are those (many actually) who can afford to get a couple lasers but don't have the safety glasses. Please be careful fellow lasorists.

One full second?!? Geez that a long time with lasers. Maybe you gave yourself laser eye surgery.

@jwc, are you sure about the bubble-like area? From what I can tell, that is the fovea of a normal retina. See for example http://www.bio.miami.edu/~cmallery/150/neuro/retina.jpg and fovea

Your bubble-like area does appear to have one or more darker spots inside the bubble. I don't see the darker spots in the other fovea photos. If these spots are indeed the laser damage area, I would think you would be seeing one or more dark spots in the center of your vision. Do you indeed see this?

It was unclear from your post whether you have any ongoing or continuing symptoms from the laser accident. Can you elaborate on whether you see unusual spots (different from normal floaters etc.)?

Thanks for helping to clarify this!

Sorry, I wasn't being very clear... I think the spot is the little tiny indentation right at the top right of the fovea. IIRC, since the image projected is inverted horizontally and vertically, that would correspond to the lower left corner of my eye. As far as I know, it is the only blind spot I have besides the regular ones that everyone has. My optometrist told me that if he didn't know that I had a blind spot, he wouldn't even notice it on the photo.

Quote:

Basically, the "spot" is a perfectly circular region. Unlike a floater, which is pretty much transparent (I have some in my other eye), the blind spot is very much like a drop of some kind of opaque liquid. It lets some light through and mimics the colors around it, but it doesn't render a clear image. I think my brain is building an image of what should be there... for example, if I stare at a straight line such that the line goes through the center of the blind spot, the line _sort of_ appears within it. Or, maybe the cells aren't all destroyed in that area; IDK.

Another interesting effect is that if you place the blindspot between two parallel lines and adjust the distance such that the diameter of the spot is just larger than the lines, the lines will bow outwards. It's a fun thing to do when I'm waiting around or something; of course, people look at me funny because I have one eye shut...
