small, safe, close range options

Hello learned gentlemen,

I come in search of wisdom, advice, and maybe some leads to hardware. I'm building a very simple, fixed focus camera that presents some challenges. The lens to subject distance is very small, so depth of field is very shallow, even when using a small aperture. As there is no focus mechanism, and focus is fixed at a set distance, I want to use two converging beams as a focus indicator. There was something similar called the Focuspot:

But the Focuspot worked with the rangefinder to converge the beams at different focus distances. My camera will have the beams fixed at the single focus distance, so a much simpler mechanism. I'm sure precision light beam technology has made some advances since the Focuspot's day. My camera is a portrait camera, so I need a safe beam. The focus distance will be in the 3'-4' range, so I don't need much power, but small, crisp dots would make focus more accurate, and it should be bright enough to see clearly on a sunny day.
