This is the warning sign, the cheapest model has been pulled without notice, No back order,no notice, just discontinued. WHY.... *reaches for the ole credit card* I believe the crystal ball will say that these items will have nearly identical replacements that will be made extra taper proof. :(

My gut feeling is they will simply epoxy over the ribbon cables with that black anti tamper crap- nothing a drill press and a flush cutting router bit cannot fix... ;)

Lol, even tightly regulated gun control is very ineffective in many places, how do they expect to regulate something anyone can build and almost no one understands without banning all sorts of consumer electronics? don't worry about it, guys, there is no 'death of the hobby' coming up, we'll just have it shipped through alternate sources if the FCC clenches the anus that is shipping regulations.

its a laser a hobbyists device, a device with specific scentific purpose. it shouldnt be conveyed as the "burn your friends eyes out super expensive awesome toy" it should be viewed as a serious thing, something that can burn your friends eyes out but that isnt going to happen because you are follow safety rules to the tee. but with all the stupid people out there all we can do is sit back and wait for someone to get in some serious trouble with this or any other high powered photonic device. im not to worried because it always happens, the rule abusers are always the people who ruin it for everyone else.

Does Goatse immediately come to mind at this point?

In Australia it's illegal to own any battery powered laser over 1mW. But we still build, don't we?

In Australia, an Nd:YAG running off a car battery is defined as a laser pointer.

In Australia, every laser device is metered before being let in, regardless of where it's from.

And does that stop us?

Exactly. It doesn't matter on the legal state of a matter, people will still do it.

^lol, I think goatse is a very good analogy to customs. And even if they did the same thing to lasers they did guns (search and destroy) in a lot of places, people still make guns out of garden pipe and tractor engines.... and I don't think they'll ban DVD burners or projectors... LOL

Perhaps casio will do something on tamper proofing.. or whatever it takes to disable simple extraction of those diodes. Lets hope that they resort to some easily removed glue or expoxy to keep things in place, such that extraction with a bit of care remains possible.

I can see the marketing aspect in such a move, casio doesnt need headlines reading 'cute little white girl blinded by casio product' - and hen be blamed their product made it easy to construct something dangerous.

In the end it will not matter though, these diodes now exist, and are probably on the chinse market as it is. Regardless of casio's response to the whole ordeal, we will be seeing them, perhaps in something as simple as a DX dilda 'blue edition'.

How about "Light sabers made out of casio projectors put children in risk of being blinded and given malignant skin cancer.", or "Police-killing terrorist laser responsible for 9/11 sold to children, casio suspected terror accomplices."

There has not been time for the Arctic to be approved. What possibly happens is it comes in under the assumption that the paperwork will be approved. Ie the paperwork has been submitted, and the sales are possibly allowed until someone says no. Ie the rules are set up to be pro business. So you ship understanding that you may have to recall. But the rules were not set up for a mass produced consumer product that is not class 1.

As for the epoxy type mod, if they used something like nC, it dulls the cutter bits quickly, ceramic loaded epoxy. Tough as nails, and heat does not budge it. Most chemicals commonly available wont touch it, and heat actually makes it harder to a point. Upside is its more thermally conductive. Wont stop a skilled, determined, hobbyist, but sure as heck will slow down professional harvesting and drop yields. It will stop unskilled folks, too.
