Default Should I register my lasers with my university as weapons?

My university is quite conservative, so they're lax about students having bows, knives and even small firearms on campus, so long as they're registered with both the university and Police department, and inspected for a 24 hour period. according to their definition, lasers are not *technically* weapons, I'm thinking it is better to be safe. registering firearms including bows means they'll be locked up in the school's firearm storage unit. obviously, this isn't desirable, as I like my lasers in my own safe storage. I do not know if they would do this for lasers. I have asked admissions and have gotten stories of kids not registering their lasers, and getting off with a confiscation.

None of the lasers that I own are illegal as of now.

Should I register my laser and risk confiscation, or should I not register my laser and risk confiscation?

Thanks for the advice,
- Tuskiomi

So,
Here's what happened:

No laser registration. you guys were right. didn't matter.

end of semester I'm discharging a 5Ah single-cell lipo in my dorm. After about a week, I decide it's about had its run and that I should do a final discharge (puncture). WRONG. the thing still had TONS of energy in it. Smoke everywhere. Fire alarms ring. no fire, though! I get in trouble with police. police find laser. busted. out of a laser. Don't know why, didn't ask. it's a cheap thing, anyway. no fines or legal action ever came. lucky me.

No. It should not be used as a weapon in any sense. I'm not understanding why you would even consider this.

He's not asking if it should be used as a weapon, he's asking if he should register it with his university as a weapon.

To that I'd say no, seeing as they don't consider them weapons and they aren't illegal.

Yea, doesn't make sense to me. This is similar to registering your car as a weapon just because it can do damage if misused.

I was simply adding context to my blunt NO. Presenting a laser to an official who is expecting a weapon may turn it into a weapon in their mind. And then he possibly starts elaborating why he thinks it should be registered...this guy walks away after turning it over and can't get over how smart he sounded to himself educating the campus cop, now turned this laser into a concern for the official who doesn't know what the hell just happened.

Short answer: No keep it to yourself and dont show your ass. You'll be fine.

You can beat an attacker with it but DO NOT shine it in their eyes...smfh

I'm not sure you understand the question.. I'm not going to be defending myself with these lasers in any manor. they're recreational only.

No. They aren't intended to be weapons by design, and you shouldn't register them as weapons just because they could potentially be used that way.

I thought this thread was started by a troll when I first saw the subject line! Weapon, ah.... no more than your fist if you choose to use it that way.

Sincerely investigate any of these three short quotes as new concepts and you've taken your first step into a larger world:

"I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness..." - Max Planck. "Everything we call real is made of things that cannot be regarded as real" - Neils Bohr. "What we call physical things and events do not exist independently of subjective experience..." - Deepak Chopra.

Each of these three rabbit holes go deep, ending up in the same place.

Useless troll fighting.

Campuses are places not to be reckoned with. I wouldn't use it there. They could confiscate it. A friend of mine had a pen shocker gag confiscated at a community college for being a weapon.
But come on though, registering it is a bit overboard? Shall I register my chainsaw with the local PD?

I used my lasers at my astrolab I had never had an issue. Just never let anyone handle them. My professors green was not enough to cut through the stadium lights. My 589 came through. Vega was even dim looking.

Registering them as a weapon implies something sinister about lasers imo.
Wouldn't do it just don't do anything double dumb assed that might be considered harassment.

It is as if reality and/or common sense never entered into your evaluation only a daydream about a laser weapon that does not exist.
Several people assumed the post was a troll post because it is so idiotic it almost certainly has to be an on purpose troll post. Look at the number of posts that indicate registering your laser as a weapon is completely disconnected from reality--is not just me--everyone thought the same thing. I may have said it a little too sharply but yikes get rid of the laser if you can't even handle thinking about it without your imagination running out of control imagining it is a weapon first and foremostly.

You might as well register everything you own that could possibly be used to hurt someon as a weapon--car, baseball bat, utensils, frying pan, knife of any kind, hockey stick, hardball, 2X4 and so on.
The only place where it might make sense is in a place designed for people who are at risk and danger to themselves or others. It would make sense is in a mental hospital wing for potential suicides/suicidal and/or homicidal seriously deranged people.

So, sorry if you found my post offensive----it was just so far out there in disconnected from the real world delusional left field, that I thought the post had to be a troll post.

Default Re: Should I register my lasers with my university as weapons?

Well if this was a troll post, I would say mission accomplished. It succeeded in getting people all riled up. Could've just left it at the first few posts where people all said "don't bother registering it". Now people have either fed the troll, or dumped all over an innocent albeit naive poster.

I completely understand your question. I know your question did not remotely suggest using a laser as a weapon. What i read from your post is that at Ted Nugent University they allow concealed carry of weapons upon compulsory registration and you wanted to register your laser with them and have it labelled as a weapon (yay I over complied). Whats obvious to me...is that you actually had to ask this question. When this goes way over required compliance. If your too stupid to stay out of trouble with a laser, I don't see how registering it will do any good at all. Or say someone else has one similar to yours and shows his ass. They don't catch him but look in their records and see your the only one who registered a laser as a weapon. And then they decide to make an example of you...none of this BS makes anyone any safer. Start using real world common sense and grow out of that college life mentality. There is no Compliant of The Year Award. Stick to your studies and don't do something to compromise the rest of your life. The End.

I took the main course away, don't want him getting upset if innocent, or too fat if not.
