I deal with that rote thinking daily over here in ROK
and it's ingrained in the local populous from primary school.
It is taxing to try and have discussions with them that incorperate
Critical thinking.
Again not all are like this, but a majority are.

I admire you, S_L, I couldn't put up with that on a daily basis.

Tautology for the lose!

I've seen that effect too, where an instructor essentially knows the course materials, but without knowledge of the subject. If the course materials contain errors, they don't have the background to notice it...and, for some personalities, its dogma that must be...no ifs and or buts.

Some instructors will consider that the material has mistakes, and, some will not.

The most frustrating are those maddening examples of common knowledge being in conflict with the presentation, and the instructor rigidly standing by the mistake as FACT.

My EARLIEST example I can think of was when I was in Kindergarten (Back in the '60's) and we watched a film about computers, and how they will change the world.

The film stated that computers would allow a worker to do 8 hours of work in only 2 hours, so people would only need to work 2 hours a day.

The teacher was using a "Study Guide" to quiz us on the film, and, she asked me how long people would have to work per day in the future, and I said all day, just like now....and she that's wrong, they will only have to work for 2 hours per day.

I said, why would a boss pay for a computer to get more work out of you, and then let you go home early....wouldn't he just want to make more money?

We argued, and I got sent to the principal for not admitting I was wrong.

So if hes correct.....then a ferromagnetic material or even paramagnetic material surrounded by a coil of wire with a electrical current flowing through it is just a microwave. (incorrect for dramatic effect)

Sorry for that but it really upsets me not only when a person tries to "teach" other people when they clearly do not understand enough to pass knowledge onto others, but also when he somehow was either invited or approved to be put in such a position. Makes me wonder who has the say in whether he is qualified or not.

I FEEL your frustration, the training in question was months ago and to this day it upsets me. If you think it's hard to read imagine BEING in the classroom and told you are wrong. I had to use all my patients not further argue with him. I emailed him and my email has not been responded too.
Sorry folks there is nothing more I can do. I could email him again but remember he doesn't care if he's wrong. This issue is not important to him.
If I see him I'll try to talk to him but it's unlikely we will ever meet again.

You did what you could short of discussing the issue with his supervisor or company that sent him, etc. as applicable.

I'd honestly say that we should all email him XD. Someone could get hurt, if they believe that all lasers are UV then they could possibly wear uv glasses with a laser that is 650nm and think they are safe. Whatbhappens when that laser reflects and strikes their eye? They could have damage all because of his misinformation.

Haha oh lord I just rolled laughing. Gotta love people.

Sometimes, you just have to let people believe what they want and enjoy the free entertainment. He
obviously believes that any doubt in his curriculum places doubt on his abilities as an instructor. Even if
he did know he was wrong, he wouldn't admit it (at least not to a student) because he feels he could lose
his job over it.

UPDATE: this instructor was "let go" over a month ago. The details are still coming in but it's possible that email I sent regarding the Instructor in question went to a corporate address not his personal. That means everyone and their brother saw it. Oops.

The email respectfully thank him for this training however pointed out some changes he should make.
I explained the hazard of IR, how one type of safety glasses does not cover all, and I linked two charts showing the lasers spectrum. Etc. I also discussed hazards of visible light too.
It was short, to the point, and professional.
Anddd effective.
