Default Protection for eyes

Im gonna get a DX30 ...so i probably dont need protection ne ways

But if i start to use mirrors and make a laser show....would black sunglasses protect my eyes a fair amount? (100% UV protective)

Thanks

Sunglasses don't protect you whatsoever from any kind of laser beam, reflected or direct exposure. Buy some safety glasses and protect your eyes, you only get one pair for life.

100% UV protective doesn't count for sh!t : Maybe 100% IR protective would do something
Seriously, the "eye safe" limit is 5mW, and the DX30 is well above that.So if you think that you're gonna be hit in the eyes , buy protective goggles.

All I have to say is that whoever wrote that has no idea what he's talking about. But if you wanna put your vision in the hands of the idiot who said this:
Quote:
Diodes come in 4 standard wavelengths: 670 nanometers, 650nanometers, 635 nanometers, and 532 nanometers.
be my guest.
All I'm saying is that he doesn't know jack about lasers, that page is very old since he claims that a 3mW greenie costs $300 and that the crap info on that page is assisted by and incredibly extremely horrible webdesign. :

OMFG, I just read most of that site. *I think this might stir up some controversy, unless there is some alternate goal. *

BTW, GET SAFTY GOGGLES FOR ANY LASER (no matter the color) OVER 5mW! - and... DON'T BUY FROM EBAY! *

You still should wear goggles.
And to fully answer your sunglass question, i'm sure there's countless threads throughout this forum about that and to answer it you'd be better off not wearing anything since the sunglasses let in less light, which in return makes your pupils dialate which means if the laser reflected into your eye's more of the light from the laser would get taken it.

In all honestly I don't like the goggles very much, but even with a 5 or 10mw you'll have a scare with a mirror or shinny object so if you don't get goggles now i'm sure you'll want them later, you just better hope that scare doesn't blind one of your eyes......

The thing is, you don't need goggles if you are super-extra careful with it, are are very confident in your common sense.(I mean I personally now a few idiots with such a small amount of common sense that even if you warn them, then put them in a room with a highpowered laser, some of them are gonna get permanent vision spots in the first 5 minutes : )

You know, in the end, we like green because it's bright....You're not gonna wear goggles all the time. They're especially good for burning, and while seting up stuff ...but you still have to take them off to enjoy the pretty shiny light once in a while If we liked invisible beams and dots, we would use IR all the time instead of green with goggles. :P

I personally don't wear eye protection when I'm pointing (indoors/outdoors) , taking pictures, etc...I guess I know enough not to put my eye in that fricking bright line I see :

You just have to be aware of what can happen when you shine your laser at a particular object. If you can't trust yourself , then wear goggles, or don't get a laser :P

Switch I don't think it's very wise for you to be telling people who might not have as much experience as yourself not to buy goggles if they trust themselves and their common sense. I think that's very poor judgement on your part, while i have faith that you know what your doing, others especially people newer to lasers don't know what to shine at or what not to, besides the obvious don't look directly into the beam.
I think you should encourage people, especially one's just getting into lasers, to buy goggles and stress the importance of wearing them. While i do sympathize and agree with you especially with greenies that half of the fasination with them is the gaze of sparkling green that you can cleary see in the air such as outside, but especially for burning or inside "play" goggles should be worn until they understand more what their dealing with in the relm of high powered lasers.

what if i buy a 5-15mw laser, will i still need goggles?

See the big problem is, i dont care about popping ballons or Powerful lasers
I want a laser to be safe, but the major thing is i want to be able to see the beam clearly and for it to be bright

If i could find a laser that was like that, i would buy it
