Many years ago when i was a kid i had the original playstation, in curiosity i noticed a button that could activated the laser, curios to see what the laser beam looked like at the time, but turned out to be invisible IR. could laser radiation exposure from this unit have posed to damage to eyes? because the internal casing had a lid closed button that activated the laser, as the playstation is a class 1 laser product under its normal intended use. but bypassing it with the lid closed button, would it then change the lasers class?

Its a CD ROM so the diode should be pretty weak and its focal point is just a few mm in front of the lens. Your eyes are most likely fine.

I did some reading and can agree with what Zeebit said - it doesn't look that powerful and if your eyes are ok now I wouldn't worry about it. I imagine looking at PS1 lasers is a thing a few of us have done ;)
