Default Re: Man points laser at police cruiser.

By now I think it's blatantly clear on where I stand, where cops and laws are concerned. That said cops are still people, and I don't see one going out of his way to put out a bolo just from seeing a laser beam. My bet is the guy was shining it at other cars going in the other direction, and not just at the cop.

Try not to judge based on appearance without additional information, but my guy reaction is "douche". Also 32 years old. That's not a dumb teenager being stupid.

There are no laser specific laws, with regards to possession, or carrying lasers, throughout most of the country, with the notable exception of some beaches and boardwalks, where the lasers became a constant nuisance. While rarely, I do sometimes take a laser with me, that requires a key, and has a diffraction grating on it. Never had an issue as I've always been careful to not point at people, or get anywhere near people's eyes. Have had quite a few people ask about lasers, including nypd cops on several occasions, and generally, so long as you're not being an @$$, people have far more issues to worry about.

I've had more "altercations" - though that's not quite the right word since they never rose to that level, because vaporizer use, than I ever have with a laser pointer.

Why does it seem that it's constantly white guys that do this? That's an interesting observation and question, and makes me wonder what the demographics of LPF are by comparison.

I don't think minorities would find this activity fun. It may have something to do with the feeling of entitlement. Difficult to say for sure.

lol you wanna take your foot out of your mouth on that statement?

I have seen minorities do a lot of low tech stupid Sh1t, entitlement is a hell of a stretch.

You do know that old race card is worn out and falling apart at the edges?

P.S. I handed a young black guy who I discovered was sleeping with this fat butt white girl that I also happened to be visiting a green pointer and he loved it, he pointed it at everything he saw.

Minorities in general are not a race. The question was why is it always white guys who seem to do this? Maybe the question should be why is it always white guys who get caught doing these things?

That's actually a pretty fair question.

I sometimes use the retroreflective road signs to focus lasers at a long distnace, obviously when there is no traffic on that road. Then again a police car could drive by 100 mp/h in the city limits and i could accidentily strike it.

Upside is that i live in a highrise and it would be very difficult to tell which appartment and floor the laser beam came from exactly if it's only a brief hit, but if you live in a freestanding house you don't have that "advantage".

I would ask you why prisons have a disproportionate number of minorities, but you will likely say it's racism, not anything to do with who commits more crime.

Why do more young black men kill each other than any other race in America?

Rest that entitlement BS, and where the hell is my white privilege?

I sure as hell haven't seen it.

I bust my ass for everything I get, but I know people in my neighborhood that tell me you just fill out some forms and get this and that, I don't get squat and I don't ask for it, I get what I earn, that's it.

This why I think we need "laser licenses".Obviously high powered portables can be used as a weapon and should therefore be regulated like guns. I personally would not mind to register all my Lasers >1mW power. Also I'd never use my lasers outside my house since it could easily be a crime in Germany and you can always unwillingly hit a flying object.
I don't think that'd completely keep idiots like the one in the article away from high power laser but cases like this should be much rarer.

Anyway that's just my opinion..

I believe in Freedom and personal responsibility, not a nanny state, although after starting 2 world wars it's ok if we continue to deny Germany nukes.

BTW you guys build some lovely diesel submarines

Here in America you don't even need a license to own a .50 bmg rifle. I believe the answer is to punish the hell out of the idiots, rather than to penalize law abiding gun/laser owners.

I don't think that'd completely keep idiots like the one in the article away from high power laser but cases like this should be much rarer.

Anyway that's just my opinion..
Oh my god, please no licenses on lasers just because idiots exist, they won't be reduced by any licenses as you mentioned. It just complicates it to legitimate users. We would need license on everything to make it effective like knives, household chemicals, common tools, sport gear, use of electricity, stones lying next to roads... There is too much regulation in EU already. And I'm affraid another one on lasers would not be adjusted to hobbyists and is likely to be some piece of $hit at the end of the political process even if original intention was not bad. If there is about to be some regulation implemented I would suggest to have something like clubs to issue license or more some permission for individual person to allow having lasers of class 3B and 4. But still it misses the pointers which are also serious hazard if misused on landing aircraft or car for example. Do not forget distraction in critical situation is the potentially killing hazard. And I would definitely not regulate individual lasers, that would be just another registry and administration needed with little to no effect as you have had to register devices like DVD players etc. Lasers are everywhere nowadays.

I believe there are some general paragraphs in law also in Germany for dealing with kinds of behaviours causing danger of injury or death of someone else. I believe they include even misuse of lasers tacitly or mentioned directly.

IMO the only way for reducing laser incidents is education of safety hazards of lasers. I'm affraid people unaware of it tend to take lasers as normal flashlight.

Finally I like to say: Lasers are safe only if treated safe.

Generally I`m with you that over-regulating everything isn't necessarily beneficial but at the moment there is no way for me to even legally purchase/import a portable laser Class 3B or above. So a license system is still better than comitting a crime everytime I import a laser from China
The only way out would be building a laser myself, which I'm not capable of..
