I know people here highly suggest not using lasers outside. The whole point to me though is to see a beautiful beam in the sky. Obviously you much watch for aircraft ect. but what are the actual laws on this? I know supposedly anything over 5mW is illegal but aren't there loopholes?

I see this website here has laws for each state but how accurate are they? Does this mean if I am caught in public with a laser without being reckless its legal?

I just need a clear answer, specific laws would be nice.

Thanks

This is a really common question. Seek, and ye shall find the answers. Also, please update your profile so we know where in the world you are. And if in the USA, which state your in. Laws vary quite a bit depending where you are.

With that said, I have never had a problem in California, USA operating my lasers, outside, responsibly. And when the authorities DO come around, sniffing, I am polite and talk with them in a friendly manner.

If you want the peace of mind and security to use your laser in a way you know it's safe, even if somebody complains and calls the cops, it isn't going to happen. The cops are free to confiscate your laser(s), even if you're not breaking any laws. And when you try to get them back, it's like pulling teeth from a tiger. Once taken, 9 times out of 10 you won't see them again.

The best way to keep your lasers, and not get into trouble, is to work VERY hard not to upset ANYONE while using them.

If somebody complains and calls the cops, they are obligated to check it out and make sure it isn't a laser-sighted weapon. And once they're sniffing around, who knows what they will find.
