Aviators use L@ser or L-Ser in their forums, so they do NOT have to see unwanted pointer adverts.

Here is the view from the other side:

L@sers attacks on Aircraft - PPRuNe Forums

Just DONT do it... The new law is on the way in the US, 300,000$ fine and or 5 years in the Federal Pen.

Those pilots are not happy.
And it does not look like concern for harmless/responsible hobbyist getting caught in the legal backlash is first on their minds.

Kind of understandable if the world suddenly turn green while you are trying to land a plane.

I wonder when some asshats figure out that they can shine a laser at other cars. There were a few cases in Denmark with kinds throwing rocks and shining lasers from highway overpasses.

I think it's just a case of fearing what they don't understand, I'm on page 8 now and lots of the posts are tales of being lased, but some are just...kinda dumb.

Anti-ice said:
It needs new legislation
A) The sale of these items needs to be restricted including auction sites, with the capability they have, something similar to firearms laws.
B) Regarding the treatment of the people who choose to aim these at airliners; After all, what can they hope to achieve by doing this, erh.. bring the airliner down.
Therefore minimum 20 years, no parole to life.
It is in effect, attempted mass murder - and sentencing should reflect that.

Although most of the people seem sensible enough.

end quote.

I posted this for three reasons:

1. I get tired of people telling me its impossible for a pointer to track/illuminate a plane. Ye old mark one mod zero human brain and hand is one of the best tracking systems that can be produced by unskilled labor.

2. Education. People who read this will hopefully understand the issues a bit better.

3. It answers the question: "Why the hate on L@sers?"

I'm not saying it's impossible or that it's not a threat, I'm saying that some of them are comparing them to shoulder fired weapons systems for crying out loud!

This is a serious issue for sure but reading the link I had to find humour in it somewhere and I think it's in the very first post...

When talking about how helicopter laser hits are increasing. The Police Pilot says the frequency is doubling each year!

Considering the case invloved a 532nm DPSS laser I would agree that the frequency is definitely doubling, but I think it is probably taking less than a year!

Somehow I don't think the pilots would get that one. :D
They appear rather ignorant of lasers in general and LPF hobbyists in particular.
Their attitude is pretty much "ban it all", and they are not likely to be swayed by arguments like "they are fun to build" and "the beam looks cool".

I see what you did there sir.

Concerning the OP, here's another offense that puts one or more people at risk of serious injury or death (airliners notwithstanding...). They got 2.5-5yrs. It's another case of people doing incredibly stupid things with easily obtainable, dangerous objects; "l@sers" should be treated similarly.

@Toke: Perhaps the interest in physics that we share with them could help...

Not to make light on the Laser/Aircraft issue....

But when I read that one about the green laser I was instantly
thinking about a 266nm Laser by next year...:undecided::crackup:

Ah well, what they should understand is a laser is basically a flashlight, just one with a rather narrow beam. Surely they are a nuisance if shone at aircraft, just as a big searchlight would be - and i don't see any bans on selling those.

If they want legislation, they should ban lighting aircraft above a certain level of lux from the ground and be done with it.

I think that when every incident is repeatedly described as a "laser attack", it is a bit... over assumptive? Maybe that's not the term I'm looking for.

I guess Its just that the term makes it seems like people are intentionally doing this with the evil idea of actually trying to ground the plane or helicopter.

Everyone that does this most likely knows that they are a nuisance to the least. But a terrorist? Hmm... interesting to think about.

Good post LASERFAQ!

As I read it the pilots are deliberately promoting/hyping the term "Laser attack" in an effort to get the problem taken serious.
Not just by legislators, but just as important, by all the dimwits out there with a $10 5mW green off ebay.

If they can get the average Mr. Dimwit to think "laser attack" instead of "shining laser at flashing lights/helicopters in the sky" it will likely make a difference to frequency.
(That is, frequency of occurrence, not colour :D)

Here's my only thoughts on that forum thread. SENSATIONALISM.

IMO there's no room here or anywhere for sensationalist bullshit. Either get your facts straight or go the f*ck home. that applies to me, you , those pilots, Steve, and Jesus Christ as far as I'm concerned. If you can't argue factually, then your argument has no merit. "Attempted murder"? Not a chance and any argument to that end is absolutely ridiculous.

I'm not saying lasers aren't dangerous nor that they pose no hazard to pilots, but the the arguments in that thread have no merit whatsoever.
