Laser Law's in North Carolina?

Hello, I am currently stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB, the base has a lot of clubs people can join or we can start our own. I was thinking about starting a laser club, as it would be awesome to get other people as amazed by lasers as I am and meet some new people. However before doing so I want to make sure I'm not going to get in trouble for something illegal. So, are there any laws on lasers in North Carolina? I looked it up and couldn't find any. Also any specific U.S. laws I should know about? The only ones I could find was this which only defines criminal use of lasers and not to shine them at airplanes (duh).

I am not sure but think since you are stationed on a federal installation you would be exempt from any local laws, I mean I don't think
the gate guard is going to let a city cop come in and look around to find the guy with the laser, you know what I mean :crackup:

not even police choppers can fly over a federal installation !

You would be better off finding out what the base commander thought about it !

I like the idea though and if it fly's it could help out us hobbyist for sure.

I guess one benefit of being on an air force base is that you know when it has operations and you should keep clear of shining lasers into the sky, as well as a good idea of what civilian traffic might be flying around.

Checking with your CO would be a good idea, but i have some feeling that most will find it more cool than dangerous.

You better be careful--there are rules and policies---you can't run around on an AFB shining a dangerous/hazardous laser wherever you want---be real.

No doubt, you will need a minmum Laser and Opitical Radiation Protection Program and a Laser Safety Officer to use lasers especially those over 5mW on any Federal reservation or AFB.

"4.1.2. Acquisition Requirements for FDA-Compliant Lasers. Any Class 1M, 2M, 3R, 3B, 4 laser, or laser system (or equivalent) which meets the description of a FDA-Compliant Laser as defined in paragraph 1.1.2. of this instruction is subject to the following criteria:
4.1.2.1. The Installation Commander shall serve as the final approval authority for the acquisition of all FDA-Compliant Lasers (or equivalent), unless otherwise delegated through installation policy.
4.1.2.2. The Installation Commander and ILSO should develop policy governing the acquisition, review, and use of FDA-compliant lasers on the installation.
4.1.2.3. The unit should coordinate with the ILSO, prior to acquiring any FDA-compliant lasers (or equivalent), to ensure local policy adherence and determine if the device is safe for use on the installation."

PS Would guess North Carolina State Law does not apply on an AFB/ Federal reservation---Federal law, rules and DOD regulations do but maybe policy is to follow all laws, Federal, State and local.
Who are the AFB law enforcement people---local NC Police or United States Air Force Police---maybe ask them, too.

i don't think people will mind...since they'll just think it just some military drill...

We have at least two and I think a third member that are active duty military, there could be more, hopefully one of them will comment on this, I know they own a few lasers. One is Navy and I think one is Army, I don't know if there is another member here that is USAF. For the rest of us we can't use a laser outside within 10 miles of an airport, it's also not legal to even shine a laser in the flight path of an aircraft, it doesn't have to be pointed at an aircraft to be illegal, so I suspect there could be a problem using them outside on an AFB but that's just a guess.
