Laser Christmas decorations

Hey everyone.
I didn't know where to post this, hope I didn't chose the wrong section, and that it hasn't been discussed before.
Today in my city I saw a couple of houses using those "laser decorations"
Pretty much a little laser device positioned in front of the house that projects multiple green dots all over it.
The laser was powerful enough for the beam to be visible, in the wavelength of 532nm, and it was probably a Chinese product, since I haven't seen them anywhere in stores before.
My question is, aren't those dangerous?

Not unless you go stick the thing right in your eye - the beams are split up into 100s of beams using a diffraction grating, so the power of each of those beams is much lower than the source beam, which probably isn't terribly powerful to begin with. I'd imagine ~20mW of 532nm and a diffraction grating would do the job for night time. That said - you could safety use more power than that.

The "Star Shower" brand seems to be one of more popular this season, many stores were sold out well before Christmas.

Hi Unleashed,
I have them in my great room they look really cool on the 26 ft. vaulted ceiling. I love them really nice Xmas prop And yes they are very bright so i positioned them to be out of eye level . Here are a few pics of them;;

Beautiful home you have there buddy. I bought a couple of those lasers a couple years ago. Like was said they're quite eye safe. I even have a pocket laser show that runs off batteries and has a small motor in it. It can be set to beam mode and the beam is 50mW but when broken up they won't even register on my LPM.

Hi OM,
Why thank you for the compliment on my home i try hard to keep it comfortable. They do the job nicely the spread is quite large. I was going to put them outside,but i said what the hell lets keep them in.That pocket laser with a motor i think thats really cool . Never seen one before i'm sure it works great and portable Wow ....And modes to .

Haven't done much research into these but wouldnt they be a much, much more power efficient way of decorating your home rather than running tones of little fairy lights across everything?

"Alien" on this forum has taken one apart on a recent thread. He had some fun playing with the drivers pot, got some good power output. I tend to like them also I just dont have one. Lifetime, very beautiful house and the lights are sure pretty :beer:

If they are anything like a grid/galaxy lens that makes one beam turn into hundreds of beams. I took readings on them before. I used a 3400mW 445nm laser. The results were ~16mW per beam near the center and <1mW per beam near the outer edge at ~ 10 feet from the aperture.

Wow Thats interesting data 16mW center That's quite a bit for a consumer product When i was setting mine up for xmas i thought they were bright. Nice homework awesome..

Alien said when he took it apart there was one pot on the board that balanced the 2 modules. On the green end he said he got something like 220mw and the most on the red was a lower 70mw or 80mw. Still pretty strong, but it was well glued and put together.

That reading is from a 3400mW 445nm source, I don't believe the output from any of these decorative commercial units is anywhere near that high.

Edit: You beat me to it GSS; so you're probably seeing less than 10% of that 16mW value at the most, and that is after Alien Laser increased the green output to 217mW.

Correct, the Christmas decoration ones are probably well below 10% of that output/readings.
