Importing a laser module or laser diode to Australia.

It is totally legal to import a Module with diode and driver attached. Can be used for anything not just a handheld laser. It is however illegal to own or posses a handheld battery operated laser over 1mW IF you are in a public place. You can also get a permit to own a laser pointer above 1 mW if you have good reason and also if you are a member of a recognised Astronomical organisation you DO NOT need a permit! The laws may differ from state to state. I live out in the bush so pretty well not a problem here. Use a bit of common sense and no one is coming looking for you anyways. Start flashing it all over your neighbourhood in people gardens and windows and it will not be long before you hear Knock Knock Knock on your door!

^ totally correct. No matter how many you want to import they are 100% legal. They can be used for many things not just laser pointers eg: laser projectors, experiments and many other cool projects!

Firstly this is a very old thread... if at all possible, please try not to dig up old threads.
Secondly just because it's MEANT to be 100% legal, customs can and will still take it, if they feel like being a dick....
Proof:
This was for importing one 30mW green laser module....
So if you are going to be buying any manufactured module that is worth > $50 you should think about the source it is coming from. I tend to stay away from anything from a well known chinese "laser company". So DX, dinodirect, wickedlasers, etc would not be a source for me. I believe these companies are on a black list and anything that comes from that address will be screened. If you feel lucky go for it.... but just remember not every custom officer is a laser expert.
