Hi, i'm going to by this laser module ( $16.43 - 50mW 532nm Green Laser Module (3V 11.9mm) - Flashlight Parts and Tools ) and i just want to make sure that it will get through customs in Australia.

New AU law banned all handheld laser pointers. Thanks to some very irresponsible individuals who decided to be brave (stupid) and point their high power lasers at the cockpit of the airplane full of passengers. IMO they deserve ( or anybody who do this) some jail time.
As a result of that, you and 1000s of AU laser enthusiasts suffer today.
If you are buying laser module only , that is probably completely different story.
Best thing you can do is to call AU customs , and ask them

lukeraf21 , i just bought a 200mW green laser module from o-like and it arrived today, mind you i have already received a interception /warning from Aust Customs for importing Whole Portable Lasers >5mw 4 months ago

yeah sorry Brenner, i ment that he didnt need to bother contacting customs, as its clearly stated on there website that its just "portable" laser pointer devices are prohibited.
I am glad to see your post because you are from AU, with importing experience.
I couldn't go any "dipper" and post without being 100% sure about official AU laws.
I am glad you get your orders though You will probably think twice before you order 3rd one...lol
Maybe importing parts/ modules ONLY is not a problem?

I guess the Australian government is trying to limit the "made easy" approach to getting ones hand on a laser. In short the type of idiot person who is likely to go around aiming at planes, cars, etc. is likely the type who just wants to drop in the batteries and press go. The person who is going to take the time to buy the parts and assemble and adjust it himself is more likely to be a dedicated hobbyist who appreciates the dangers of these devices and uses them with care and respect.
However, I agree. It is unfortunate that irresponsible fools have to make things bad for legitimate sensible people.

I'd wager the best way to go about getting a laser in this position is to purchase parts from separate buyers....Kinda how the Batman in the "Dark Knight" had to ship his stuff in from all over to keep people from knowing what he was making (If you haven't seen that movie, sorry...)

I hope I dont get caught, but I belive I wont, as the Customs website says "Hand-Held Pointers over 1mW are banned".

All packages goes through the Australian customs, but only a few percentages are getting checked.
Basically, the packages are all going to get scanned / X-rayed, and if the customs finds any of them suspicious, they will open the packages to see if the content is allowed.
It's obviously harder to spot a diode rather than a whole laser, and if you order some random stuff with the diode, the customs won't get suspicious.

Secondly WELCOME! The more Aussies the better!
The only restriction in Australia is any prebuilt, hand held laser, that emit an output greater than 1mW.
If you buy in parts and build it your self, customs will not have a problem with it. Also a lab style laser (one that must be plugged into the mains power to operate) are allowed with no restriction on power.
