That picture is a fake. I can tell that was taken inside a sim. Pilots don't wear BDUs while flying and that person doesn't have the seat belt/shoulder harness on.

This picture also looks fake to me. The angle looks like it is too sharp to hit the pilot in the eyes and the beam itself looks fake.


I'm not saying it doesn't happen. It's just that they need more realistic pictures to show what happens.

Hmm... that worries me a little because I was selling some lasers on ebay, now if something happend with one of my customers, could I be held resposible? I have stated the saftey procautions of lasers, reccomended goggles and told them not to point at aircraft (or anything living for that matter)... but I just wondered if they could somehow pin it on me...

Did you make it clear you are not responsible for anything your costumers do with the lasers?

I think mythbusters should test the theory, they give the pilots safety goggles, while a cameraman films from the back of the cockpit, and someone on the ground shines up a laser and see's if ts even possible. These dys the news stresses about everything, they even caught a kid that took a disposable camera to school and shocked people with it, geesh....... I still think these people should be punished, but the news makes such a big fuss about everything.

I did stress saftey procautions and what not to do with it basically, i'm not too worried. I can't see how I can get in much trouble for something stupid they did, anyhow, the mythbusters idea is awesome... but will probly never happen because it would be too short of a demonstration. not enough air time

The only way you could get in trouble is if you built the laser and sold it without FDA accession registration particularly if it is Class 3B or higher. If that is the case and the person injures someone or themselves you could be arrested, or heavily fined for providing unlicensed laser systems to the public in violation of FDA regulations. That then opens the door to civil litigation from the victims.

Statements such as "we are not responsible for what you do with this product" are only defensible when the defendant has provided the components to the plaintiff within the bounds of the law.

Keep in mind that if you buy a 200mW 532nm laser pointer from some company, for example, and resell it on ebay when you get bored with it, you can be fined for selling it as well as open yourself up to civil litigation. Laser pointers that are greater then 5mW output (Class 3B or higher) do NOT have FDA accession numbers because the units lack the required safety features required on all 3B and 4 laser systems. That is why you see them shipped as light pens or flashlights or LED pens, etc. They are shipped with falsified customs documentation (a felony) to minimize the chance customs inspectors will select that shipment and it totally bypasses the FDA inspection. If you get caught, the FDA and customs won't go after the original seller as these guys are in China. They just file complaints and watch for imports from that company. They will, however, make an example of you since you are right there in front of them, so to speak. Most of the time they just confiscate the laser and you are out the money but with the rise in laser flash-blinding I'll guarantee someone will be made an example. Be careful it's not one of you guys.

The one woth the 747 BA was fake. The other ones were real! I had a vid on one of them. The military one i remember reading was done whilst on the ground just to prove a point.

Now I know I am to new to laser's to say I know much about them or alot about safety. But that's just commen since not to point a laser at a plane. Such Idoit's.

there is another thread and I think we made the conclusion that the only damage possible to a plane is during take off/ landing where the plane is close enough to the pointer to cause some damage/ flash blindness...

I can genuinely see the threat BUT its all over hyped AND the rules should outlaw laser pointers within X miles of an airport not all together....

or they could fit a 200W greenie to the underside of the plane so that the pilotcould fire back
