Hello everyone,
This thread is about my friends and lasers. My lasers are over 200mW and they just dont understand why they are dangerous, acting like kids. They say that its just a light and it wont hurt....
Any tips to make them care about their safety?

Burn something in front of them, and tell them that something similar will happen to their eyes if they treat high powered lasers like toys.

Don't give your friends the lasers to play with, simple. If they don't think they can hurt them, they shouldn't be allowed near them.

Maybe show them a link to what happened to members who have unfortunately damaged their vision through lasers?

Tell them to close their eyes shut and film the laser blistering their arm as they foolishly held their arm out for a "its humanely impossible to" test

Burn some nearby wood, or anything rubber/leather like, shoes etc.., Works for me..

That's my worst case persuation test. Fortunately, when my friends see my laser burning something, they no longer want it shining onto any part of their body. :D

light can't hurt? ask if they've ever been sunburned, or played with a magnifying glass. I played with a magnifying glass as a kid. just a few square inches of light focused into a tight dot burns powerfully, at least as well as a 500mW, if not more.

anyone ever LPM the dot from a focused magnifying glass? is this possible? I'd be curious to know the results

When I was a kid, I used to burn ants with a magnifying glass by collimating the sun's light. Laser light through a lens works the same way... that might be a reference they can understand (except it's just all one color).

Just from a quick back of the envelope calculation, a magnifying glass with a radius of 4cm would pass about 5W of light through it. Assuming you could focus it to as well a point as a, say, 445nm laser, this would EASILY blind you just as a 445nm laser would. The only difference is that the sun is definitely NOT a point source.

I prefer the endurance test method.

"Oh you're right, light can't hurt you... just put your hand here for a few seconds."

Invariably followed by "Ouch" or "Ow".

"If it does that to your skin, imagine what it will do to the unprotected sensitive cells in your eyes."

If they still don't believe you, just poke them. Then offer to poke them in the eye so they can compare the results. :eg:
