some idiot several metres away hit me in the eye with a greenie, it was about 5mw but no way to tell

i can only describe it as like putting a disposable camera on top of your nose then letting the flash gun off

it made me feel very uncomfortable, i went to an eye specialist a few weeks later and they couldn't see any damage, but could they even tell by then?

i probably won't even see that **** again though, ******...

next time someone puts a laser >1mw in my face i will destroy it

Glad to hear it was just a 5mW laser. If the doctor said there that there is no damage then I don't see a reason why you should be afraid :)
There are no spots in your vision are there?
It must be some kind of nerd who bought a cheap greenie to play around with. I hate them.

Unlikely it would have caused any damage, the human blink reflex is too quick to let that happen at lower powers. If it was 50mW+, then it may have been a different story.

That is the whole idea of the laser pointer bans, stop random people off the street obtaining them. We will always be able to build them ourselves.

Several years ago at a local gun show, some guy shined a red weapon laser in my eyes for less than a second, I went 100% blind for what seemed like 10 or 15 minutes but in reality it was only maybe a minute or so. I was totally terrified,I didnt know what to do. I was in a large crowd of people but couldnt see anything,I just froze.after a few minutes my vision started coming back. I dont know the power but I'm sure it was way more then 5.

There are some real ignorant people around - you're probably lucky it wasn't a higher nm laser

pwilson has a point. If the nm is lower i.e 405nm, then the eye cells would photochemically react FASTER than say 532nm. But then again, its sorta down to the mW

How do you know?

I could probably roughly estimate the power by looking at a lasers beam, but i have no idea how bright it would appear when it hit me straight in the eye. It's something i am not willing to find out, even with a 'safe' laser of 5 or even 1 mW.
