Um, it should only work with your right eye unless you flip the image to reverse the dot and the crosshair. If it works with your left eye as is, you have a non-standard blind spot in that eye and should probably go see an eye doctor.

He probably just looked at the dot and saw the crosshairs disappear for his other eye, that is what I did.

And I doubt an eye doctor will be much good for an alien :P

Your retina doesn't care if the pixels on the screen are arranged in a dot or in a cross, just that they are different from their surroundings.

Looking at the diagram here on my monitor, i need to be about 20 cm away from the screen for either symbol to disappear. Its also fairly important to have your head level with the screen, otherwise the symbol may never enter the blind spot.

In some people the blind spot is not exactly in the 'normal' location though - it can be offset slightly vertically or a a bit of a different angle from central vision. This is typically not something to worry about at all if your vision is otherwise normal.

All vertebrates have a blind spot, because are retina's are basically positioned 'backwards' - with the light sensitive part onto the back of the eyes, and the nerves and blood vessels running over this light sensitive layer. The blind spot is where the bundle of nerves and vessels goes -through- the retina, leaving a small area that is not sensitive to light.

If you are an octopus, however, you are perfectly welcome to complain about the test not working for you

My eyes were watering reading about what happened.
Glad you have kept some vision though, you're a lucky man.
You could become part of the current internet meme; "i wanted to make a laser contraption like you, then i took a laser to the eye"
(i had to sorry)

Hope your eye gets better.

This page is bookmarked for my friends and family and for any crazies out there that i stumble across that dont think they need to use eye safety equipment.

The blind spot test pic worked for me. I was very impressed with that, you learn something new everyday. Another keeper for friends and family.

Keep safe all.

They should put 1w+ lasers on military guns for storming houses, enough to make a pitch black room bright enough to see in as well as temporarily blind the assailant
