Just found an article about the effects of a 400mw laser being shone directly into the eye. Am unable to create a link to the article but have copied some of it.
"Laser research organization reveals that direct exposure to over 400mw high power green laser pointers can damage the human eye to some extent. Certainly, here I mean the green laser pointer rather than red laser pointers, coz the power of the former beam is much stronger.
It's not warning people of not using green laser pointers, but of using it safely, if not creatively(see how to use a green laser pointer creatively.
The study, published in the May issue of the journal Archives of Ophthalmology, found that exposures of just 60 seconds to over 400mw green laser pointers can cause visible harm to the eye's retina while as long as you don't point at the laser beam upon your eyes with the high powered green laser pointer, the self-healing power of naked eyes will "handle" it right.
The Mayo Clinic study was conducted by pointing a green laser pointer directly at the retina of a patient's eye. The eye was already scheduled for removal due to a malignancy.
The green laser caused damage to the pigment layer of the patient's retina, researchers report, but it didn't cause a measurable decrease to the eye's vision, so the Laserto.com hope most laser users can use it with caution, esp. when handling a over 400mw green laser pointer".

It struck me as sounding way off the mark with other articles that I have read in this forum on laser safety and damage caused by much lower rated lasers. Would be very interested in peoples thoughts on this.
