Diffuse Safety Issues?

I have a 200mW 405nm (violet) laser and the recommended (red tinted) glasses from OEM Laser Systems. Obviously, if I view the diffuse dot of this laser on any surface without the glasses, the result is painfully bright, and something I don't plan on doing again. With the glasses on, the dot is just bright enough to be seen clearly, but not even remotely close to painful. Is there any hidden danger to staring at the (diffuse) dot of this laser with the glasses on? The website says the glasses are OD 5 for UV and OD 2 for violet, so I should be okay, correct? I just want to make sure I'm not doing anything stupid without realizing it. Thank you.

Yep, as long as your goggles block violet and really are OD2 then it will be safe even if you hit yourself directly in the eye, but my 250mW+ laser doesn't look painfully bright unless it hits something flourescent and I'm not wearing goggles. Is this what you're talking about? The flourescence of objects may be more visible even through goggles, since the wavelength changes.

Maybe I'm just unusually sensitive, but a few seconds of looking at my violet laser dot on a matte, non-florescent, black surface already has me seeing a ghost of the dot for a few minutes afterward. Either way, with the goggles on, it's fine, so I guess that isn't really a problem. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some "invisible danger" with staring at the dot with the glasses on. I don't know why there would be, but I figured I'd ask to make sure. Thanks again.
